A Bangor and Boston era piece argues for rapid enlistment and substitutes to meet a five hundred thousand man draft, urging recruiting offices and paid substitutes to back the Union war effort. It urges citizens to act, noting Bangor’s scheme and calling on churches and societies to mobilize, while defending Grant’s leadership and warning against peace terms with the Confederacy.

Numbers of men turned out for the armies in Civil War era

The copperhead press claims over two million men called and sent to the fields since the war began. It cites May 1863 to July 1866 drafts, three and four year enrollments, and large quotas canceled by credits and re-enlistments. The article questions these tallies, noting many drafted or enlisted men did not rise to active strength, and estimates total volunteers or drafted at about 200,000 since last October. It discusses subscriptions and fundraising efforts to prevent drafts and support substitutes, urging citizens to contribute to the Bangor Society fund. Also reports the death of Lieut. Col. W. P. Spofford of the 1st Maine Volunteers.
