London report says Germany sent a note to Sweden expressing regret over the wording of telegrams sent by German representatives in Argentina. Germany acknowledges Sweden helped transmit the messages and thanks Sweden for its aid in the matter.
Washington reports a commission to probe Arizona copper mines and labor relations. The move, urged to President Wilson by Samuel Gompers, aims to test the charges of intimidation and deportation of miners by copper interests.
A chaotic race between Buck Shelson’s racer and Paice carrom Elko to Welly ended with Nelson’s car in the lead before Paice faltered. The Paice broke, repairs delayed, and Nelson’s car kept steady pace as both machines suffered frame trouble and damage. If the race resumes, Paice may drive again and Hid Bodro would take the wheel.
The Elko County grand jury renders a partial report from the September term. It notes one homicide case, cites ignored sign board laws, calls for calm county city relations, urges fair housing at the county court house, and asks the liquor board to thoroughly investigate license objections.
Seven Iowa stockmen died and ten were injured in a rear end collision on the Burlington division near Earlville. Two sleeping cars and a way car were struck when a merchandise train plowed into the trains, wrecking the cars.

In Bombay and Madras the Madras government released two associates and theosophical society head Annie Desant from internment for political agitation. The private telegram reports their detention and release details.
Seattle wood workers at the Seattle Construction and Dry Dock company resumed work after agreeing to use Iumier mills, observing the last hour day law. Local sheriff received word of a hold up and murder in Reno last Saturday night, with W. A. Phillipanke identified as the victim. Local officers were alerted to seek the suspect amid a large arrival of Jorbidge residents for tomorrow’s murder trial.
A grand jury indicted the defendant for grand larceny and related matters. The document requests sealing of the indictment, noting the accused has not been arrested or in custody. Respectfully submitted on September 13 1017 by Mrs AO Olmsted.
W M Wiley argues that government forms the foundation of business and that business leaders must support and demand civic education. He calls for schools to train citizens to vote wisely and for public pressure on teachers and institutions to elevate citizenship and governance in every grade from primary through college.
English and Scottish regiments conducted raids on German trenches in the Arras and Somme regions. Several Germans were killed in dugouts and a number of prisoners were taken.

In Stockholm a large liberal gathering unanimously approved a resolution urged by Professor Eden. The motion expressed regret that the Swedish foreign office could not deny forwarding cipher telegrams while claiming ignorance of their contents. The issue sparked Swedes’ abhorrence toward the cipher affair. Germany ordered its diplomats abroad to refuse any demand to reveal code message contents to Sweden.
The State Department reports the American consular agency at Dun Kirk France was destroyed by a German bomb on September 7. Consular Agent Morelunin escaped uninjured and the archives were saved. No further details given. It is assumed the bomb fell from a German airplane.
