Field Marshal Von Hindenburg launches a major assault with four hundred thousand infantry and heavy artillery to seize Vilna Dvinsk and Riga. Russians retreat under pressure. German forces score successes in the region amid broader setbacks elsewhere.
The Griswold residence suffered severe damage last evening when a blaze in the second story broke out around six. Estimated loss is three to four thousand dollars with most covered by insurance. Firefighters and two boys who alerted the alarm helped limit damage. clothing and personal effects were ruined for Miss Knemeyer and Miss Duanne.
In Nogales Sonora Villistas seized the city while concentrating fire from forty machine guns and twenty field pieces. Carranza forces suffered 115 dead 300 wounded and 650 prisoners as hundreds of Americans watched the battle. Fighting continued since Tuesday.

Dutch, a well known local figure, returns to Elko after a year away and opens a cafe in the rear of the Louvre saloon. He declares Elko the best town and says he plans to stay, expressing his gladness to be back.
Dan Edwards who buys horses for the French government hosted a duck dinner at the Mayer Hotel last evening. Guests included E. Mayer J. B. Fitzgerald George Hawkes A. B. Kimbell and the host. The event was described as the finest dinner in Mike. A. V. Doan Reno civil engineer died at age thirty. He was formerly with Union Lad and Livestock Co. in Elko county last month.
