Fifth Day at Elko Rodeo Draws Small Crowd

The fifth day of Elko’s Fourth Annual Rodeo and County Fair saw attendance around 1500, with fine weather and strong race action. Dolly won the 600 yard horse race, Brown Carrie won the file sulky trot, Stenovitch edged Rex in the pony race, and Jeronimo led in the ladies riding event before Miss Worden fell but recovered. Stage Line won the half mile free for all after a delayed start, with Red taking the official race and Regret second in the later run.

Grant Lease Ships Sixty Tons of Ore at Rip Van Winkle

Grant Brothers leased the south end of the Rip Van Winkle, delivering sixty tons of ore for the week ending Rodeo. The ore averaged 64 percent lead with three grades selling from 70 to 140 dollars per ton, plus nearly two dollars a ton premium for iron fluxing. Ore depth reached 60 feet where zinc sulphides and iron were found. plans to start on adjoining property are underway.

Auto Accident Near Bridge Injures Stranger's Car, Franks Russell Safe

An auto collision occurred near the bridge to the Rodeo ground yesterday evening. Frank Russell, driving toward town, was struck by a stranger whose brakes failed, badly damaging the other car while Russell escaped injury.

Sheep shipment to Carson valley begins in October

About 20 000 head of sheep are to be brought in by train from the eastern region to graze on Carson valley pastures. The Dangberg company plans for winter and spring feeding, with alfalfa crops cut in the valley and cattle kept for upcoming seasons. Improvements on the estate accompany the influx of livestock.

Cows Die After Attacks by Mad Coyotes

Lou Eastman reports five head of valuable cattle bitten by coyotes in the northern county. The cows went mad and died in agony, prompting calls to veterinary experts about rabies transmission to calves and possibly humans. The cattlemen and sheepmen associations join university and U S government efforts to stamp out the threat.

Ribbons Awarded at Elko County Agricultural Exhibits

Judges led by H. C. Hardesty and L. Merkley awarded blue ribbons at the Elko county fair exhibits last evening. Winners include Mrs. C. E. Lofthouse for best canned vegetables and fruits, C. W. Lofthouse for summer squash, Knox Crane for turnips, Jack Thatcher for beets, and A Lamb & Co. securing multiple firsts for cabbage and other produce.

United Press reports the government plans a broad purge of all August officials able to prove involvement in a conspiracy to cripple U S industries. It will remove those in the diplomatic service and deal with German and Austrian agents, with recalls and expulsions.

Awards Made in Olonge Exhibits at County Fair

The Rodeo and annual county fair showcase prizes in livestock. George Mo Bewers wins first prize for Percheron stallion Mentone. second prize to N M Ne Kohawvon for Percheron stallion. Stutney Blue Blood named best noted gelding. Louis Sharp of Ruby Valley takes first for best Cotswold lambs and best two year old Cotswold buck. Joseph Tiennen of Pleasant Valley wins first prize for best boar weighing six hundred twenty-five pounds. Mr Hennen also earns first prize for Cotswold buck and ewe.

Cowboy pitcher attacked near Louvre saloon in rodeo week

A hobo attacked Eddie Center, visiting cowboys star and Bike pitcher, outside the Louvre saloon last evening. Center struck the assailant who slashed him with a knife and fled toward an east bound freight train. Cowboys chased but could not stop him. Governor Tasker L. Oddie is in town for the races and barbecue during Rodeo week.

Strike at Bullion in Webfoot Tunnel

An early edition reports a major strike at the Webfoot tunnel near Bullion in Nevada. Frederick Davis at Bullion verifies a vein extraction with ore shipped to Bullion. strike yields about one hundred ounces of silver and fourteen percent copper on the Nevada Bunker Hill ground.
