Berlin via Amsterdam reports Alemany victory in Somme battle. Allied losses include heavy sacrifices with English critics noting severe costs per square yard. Swiss papers estimate allied officers and men lost June to October at about 7,600 and 90,000 respectively.
A prominent citizen praises Sheriff Joe C Harris for frugal, effective policing saving taxpayers from high trial costs. District Attorney Ted Carville notes Harris’s ability to obtain confessions through persuasion and economy, while Harris defends prudent spending. Friends of County Clerk Robert B. Hunter report strong, cross party support after countywide hearings. They credit him with tax savings and office efficiency, noting broad taxpayer praise for his methods and character and predicting an overwhelming reelect.
Civil conflict erupts in Bayonne New Jersey as waterfront strikers clash with police. A 50 year old woman, Mrs Stephen Popp, mother in law of labor leader Stephen Peregerla, is killed during a mob assault as officers fire warning shots and retreat.
