London reports German forces under Von Falkenhayn and Von Mackensen driving toward Bucharest. The Danube front is threatened as rail links are cut, raising fears that Romania may fall and open a route for invasion through Bulgaria.
Gadt and Co. once a leading county firm founded in 1868 faces receivership after directors petitioned Judge Taber. Herbert Badt named receiver as many assets exceed liabilities, with corporate allies describing a temporary setback and pledge of a renewed future.
Springfield dispatch reports Governor Dunne of Illinois honored a requisition by Nevada for A. G. Crane president of Interstate Life Insurance. Crane to be taken to Winnemucca by Humboldt County Sheriff. He is jailed at Oquawka on a $1000 false pretenses charge. Grand jury returned four indictments against Crane and H. Howard Dunbar.
Robert Catlin, testing shale from beds south of Elko, leaves for the east after days here. He plans to start a nearly completed plant early spring with chemist T. J. Hoover to run experiments. Hoover will sample shale in San Francisco. Catlin will not sink further due to water, but will cross-cut at the hundred foot level as the lowest shale level is rich in paraffin.
The Lowell Flour Mill in Elko County began its first run of four, with W W Percival touting modern equipment and access to top quality wheat. He says ample supplies will sustain production, keeping dollars at home and boosting local farming, with plans to match or surpass market quality.
Sheriff Harris investigated a ranch on Susie Creek after four men in a car fired on the Huntsman property owned by Hunter and Banks. T. M. Moe has overseen shipment of 4 melters to Bullion copper camp 28 miles south. All machinery arrived and part moved to site. Smelter will run on coke and crude oil with 150 ton capacity. Nine leagers ship ore. large ore bodies found. thousands of tons on dumps to be smelted. Smelter operation expected before year end.
General Funston orders winter cantonments at border stations for troops stationed near San Antonio. Troops will remain nearby during winter, not sent far from home.
Full returns show the Assembly at 20 Democrats to 16 Republicans with one independent, Lander. Senate Republicans lead 9 to 5 with two independent Republicans and one independent Democrat. After apportionment Elko retains two holdover seats, Senate to 16. List of new Assembly and holdover Senators provided.
George A. Montrose former Carson News editor now Gardnerville attorney and staunch Republican has bet C. M. Krummel a Democrat that the loser must stand on Main Street and shout three cheers for the president elect. Montrose may groan but will cheer loudly if required.
The eighteen month old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Doherty died at their home after a long illness of typhoid pneumonia. Funeral services were held at Keyser Chapel at two this afternoon with Rev Father McNally officiating. The family and friends extend sincere sympathy and pray for the child’s peaceful rest.
Chattanooga Tenn November 20 Speaker Champ Clark asserts Democrats will control the house with at least a one seat majority and possibly three.
