Flooded Piave Front Complicates Italian Push Near Venice

Allied report details Italian engineers opening floodgates on the Piave and Silo rivers. Enemy crossings near Zuccherina are submerged, creating a large triangular inundation that blocks water routes toward Venice and hampers German advances. Other fronts also show favorable reports.

British Ship Kangko City Lost At Sea

The British steamer Banana City was lost at sea after separating from her convoy on September 5. The Navy Department announced the loss today. On board was Amir H. Amuir of Roland Park New Jersey a first class signal man.

Old Glory's Owner an Elko Visitor

Captain HL Moeland, a Civil War veteran and Welle resident, visits Elko as a guest of the original Old Glory owners, Captain William Driver and Mrs. Roland. Captain Roland, born 1809 in Salem, recalls Civil War battles and a Chattanooga anecdote. County assessor totals for 1917 listed, with real estate and personal property values. Pedro Orbe and Wm Barney, Lynn miners, are in Elko.

Board Refuses Commutation For Life Prisoner In Elko County

The state board denied a petition by Perley Mickel who is serving life for criminal assault in Elko County. The board also refused pardons for Len Goresbeck and six other Clark County men convicted under the anti gambling law. Several Elko cases were acted upon including paroles and sentences ranging from one to fourteen years for offenses such as forgery burglary grand larceny and larceny from person. Some paroles come with conditions such as direct unity and family support requirements.

Italians Claim Victory Along Entire Line

Rome reports Austro German attacks on the Have river and mountain front from Asiga to the sea were repulsed. All attacked positions remained in Italian hands. The Twenty Century club plans a Friday meeting at Mrs. C W Griswold home with a music program led by Mr Howe of the State Industrial School. Frank May, a sheep man, arrives from Gold Creek.

Elko Forms Home Guard Under Captain George C Jensen

A large crowd at the Elko Court House tonight organized a home guard led by Prof. George C Jensen. Members elected include J C Doughty as clerk and dozens signed onto the roll. Drill begins this afternoon at 4:30 with plans for squads and a band organizing later.

Nevada stockmen meet to locate cattle driveways

Captain E G Hair of the land department calls a November 20 Elko meeting of all catt lemen to locate driveways and prevent homesteaders from blocking routes under the 640 acre act. Driveways will be withdrawn from entry, finalizing the driveway settlement and inviting stockmen to specify lands for withdrawal.

Y M C A Work Undertaken By Nevada Home Guard

After disposition of the organization a committee led by Joseph Snelson Harry Bartlett and Robert Newman was formed to build a drive for the $35,000 000 M C A fund. Early contributions totaled about $250 with pledges for more to come. Captain Jensen is a capable leader and Elko plans a home guard company that could rival western units.

Citizens of Elko County urged to contribute to a nationwide 35 million dollar Y M C A drive. Elko portion set at 4500 dollars. Call to action to mail donations to Charles B. Henderson without delay, emphasizing support for soldiers and war relief with a urging tone.

Red Cross advises against second hand clothing collection

Secretary J C Doughty reports inquiries about second hand clothing for Red Cross purchases. Marshal Hale states no donations will be sent abroad due to freight shortages and Washington guidance.
