Washington May 18. The house naval committee tentatively favors a five year plan replacing two dreadnoughts and two battle cruisers annually with five battle cruisers, twenty submarines and zero dreadnoughts. The change follows abandoning the previous five year program.
Berlin reports that French regiments of African troops are fighting near Verdun. An army officer claims black soldiers attacked east of Vaux, then fled under artillery fire. Wounded nurses and surgeons were killed by previously wounded black soldiers. three identified shooters face execution.
Mrs Stephen Clark died at Boling hospital at 1 30 am after an illness of three days She was wife of Stephen Clark longtime employee of Garcia harness The family leaves a four year old daughter and a four month old son The mother and sister of Mr Clark arrived from Reno to attend the funeral at Keyser chapel at 2 pm tomorrow The bereaved husband has the sympathy of many friends
The imperial post office department reports that since the war began three thousand German daily and weekly papers and monthly magazines have ceased publishing due to declining circulation fewer advertisements and higher white paper prices.
Secretary Daniels announced that effective June 19 Admiral Frank N. Fletcher will retire as admiral of the Atlantic fleet and move to shore duty. He will be succeeded by Vice Admiral Henry T. Mayo in a transfer reflecting changes in command structure announced from Washington.

Six hundred high school boys from the Middle West begin a two week intensive military training at Culver Military Academy Culver Ind May 18. The program emphasizes first aid sanitation and drill with tents army rations and self paid expenses of 11.25 for subsistence and 6.50 for uniforms. Two free scholarships are offered per city with broader support from local preparedness groups in several cities to fund additional spots.
In Waukegan Illinois May 18 the Will Orpet murder trial of Marion Lambert, Lake Forest high school girl, continues with only one juror seated. Three tentative jurors selected from 136, venue called, and it may take all week to fill the panel. Orpet will testify. Celeste Yonker of De Kalb will be a state's witness.
A Tuscarora man shot and killed his wife Carrie and then failed to carry out a promised double suicide. The couple, known for drug troubles and a troubled life, left Ham jailed after a coroner’s inquest. Ham faces a preliminary examination next Monday in Tuscarora.

In Ansonia Connecticut May 18 five persons were wounded and one probably fatally when about 100 armed strikers attacked the Ansonia Manufacturing Company plant. They clashed with 200 non union workers and guards until police and fire departments were summoned and the attackers were routed.

Ray Wall a 40 year old man traveling across the country was killed early yesterday in the Sparks yards when east bound passenger train No. 2 ran over him. He was badly mangled with both feet and legs severed. An inquest will be held tonight by Coroner Devine. Wall’s identity was only known by a companion. no other identifying details were found.

He worked at Verdi Lumber Co store and was nephew of Constable Charles G Powning and Thomas Powning. Cremated last Saturday, ashes to be buried on Decoration Day at Crystal Peak cemetery beside his father.
