Brest France May 8 Brest prepares to display American flags as the first U S warship approaches. A trade question accompanies the port's use as an American naval base. Brest would shorten the Atlantic route by about 43 miles to New York compared with Plymouth England.

Greek Ship Partheon Sunk By German Submarine

The Greek steamship Partheon sailing from New York to Havre April 14 was sunk by a German submarine. Four million dollars in the ship and cargo were lost, according to a dispatch to its owners received this morning.

William A Farish Pioneer Mining Man Dies in Los Angeles

William A Farish a leading Pacific coast mining figure died in Los Angeles on Friday while returning from a mining trip to Arizona. He helped report the Tuscaroom district in Elko county and owned the Monumental mine in Sierra county. Survived by a widow two sons and a daughter. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery San Mateo county expected early this week.

Billion Dollar Plan to Build Wooden Merchant Fleet

Washington May 8 Congress will soon be asked to appropriate one billion dollars for this wooden fleet to combat submarine threats. London May 8 Three Norwegian steamers the Toleka Vale and Tramp have been sunk by German submarines. Three Hyex were lost from the Steamer Vale.

Wheat sells at three dollars record price in latest market

May 8 report shows winter wheat yields forecast at 356,116,000 bushels from 27,453,040 acres with 73.2 percent condition for May. Prices on the Chicago board rose to 3.00 a bushel, a record high, with July at 2.97. Hoover urged creation of a separate government department to control food staples, especially wheat and sugar. Rye output seen at 60,735,000 bushels and hay at 88.7 percent of normal. Farm stock totals reach 12,488,000 tons, about 74 percent of last year.

Harry W. Chenowith and Lyla M. Jones wed today at the bride's ranch home three miles west of Elko. Rev. J. M. Swander officiated as guests witnessed the surprise ceremony. The groom works for Bell Telephone in long distance duties. The couple departed on No. 19 for a short honeymoon.

Artillery Active Throughout Night on Western Front

British official bulletin reports enemy artillery bursts at intervals along the front between Fresnoy and Loos. British guns replied and raids succeeded near Neuve Chapelle and Fraquassart. A small enemy party raided northwest of Aventierres, but after hand to hand fighting the attackers were driven out.

German Divers Supplied by American Ships in Atlantic

County board approves 10000 for Jarbidge road project
