A wartime dispatch reports heavy storms causing ship losses and damage. Three British destroyers were sunk while four other warships were crippled, signaling a major naval setback amid turbulent conditions. The chaotic weather also disrupted a traveling circus, forcing its move to Ogden after storms damaged equipment and tents along routes in Nevada.
Special to The Independent reports a massive blaze in Unis city causing millions in damage. Forty dead and about one thousand injured with twelve thousand homeless. Seven blocks burned in business district then spread to residential zones. Nearby cities rush aid amid fears of further suffering.
A heavy wind storm hit Fallon and toppled Barnes circus tent during an afternoon show. The center pole fell, walls tore, and patrons fled as animals escaped briefly. No serious injuries reported. damages estimated at $5,000. Evening performance canceled. Uncle Bob Tucker visited from Pie Creek.
Cleveland Ohio May 1 The Wheeling and Lake Erie railroad plans a new through service to Wheeling with dainty maidens replacing male waiters on dining cars. Trained girls will balance trays at speed and collect tips as trains run across the state.
Mrs Ida B Dakin Swift longtime Elko resident born May 11 1876 in Lamoille Valley died after a lingering illness at ten o clock at her home in Elko Survived by one son four sisters including Mrs Chas Noble Mrs T Jones Mrs George Woulford and Mrs C W Grinwold one brother Judson Dakin and her aged mother The funeral is set for tomorrow at two from the Griswold residence with viewing from nine to twelve
Justice Castle held an inquest on Cornelius O Connell who died at the hot hole west of Kiko and the jury ruled natural causes. Relatives in Chicago directed embalming and shipment to that city Missouri at the Exposition San Francisco May 1 Missouri aims to showcase at the state building with Governor Major to attend on the big day funeral for the deceased to be held tomorrow. The obituary praises the deceased woman’s virtue and faith as she nears eternal peace.
The film Mignon stars Beatriz Michelena and features her wolfhound. The dog barked at the screen believing her in danger, tearing the display during a scene. The Wigwam screens the five act production with music by the Wigwam Orchestra and Pathe News.
Washington reports rumors of an engagement between Clarence H. Mackay president of the Postal Telegraph and Mrs John Jacob Astor. A party including Mrs Astor's companion Mrs J E Widener traveled by special car to Fredericksburg battlefield then to other southern sites. The Astor and Mackay marriages ended in divorce. Mrs Astor's late husband perished on the Titanic and her infant heir is valued at about eight million dollars.
San Francisco May 1 report says the steamer Harvard carrying about three hundred passengers had a near drowning incident after damage. The vessel is one of the coast steamers and the event prompted safety concerns and a search for the cause.

The Humboldt Star reports at Bullhead ranch on the Little Humboldt a rabid coyote bit all 11 pups in a pen after jumping a five foot fence. Four old dogs killed the coyote but were bitten themselves. all dogs were killed next day to prevent rabies. The thoroughbred Ruselin wolf hounds hunted coyotes and owner Supt. Buton laments the loss.
Rev Swander of the Presbyterian church united Chas W Jones and Mra KG HU, both of Winnemucca, in marriage yesterday afternoon. Witnesses were James Dunn and Miss Staunton. The party arrived on No 10, had breakfast at Mayer Cafe, then headed home on No 19.
