Interned Germans' Escape Attempt Ends in Drowning
In the Philadelphia navy yard several German internees attempted to escape by swimming the back channel and meadow area. One lieutenant Chort and machinist mate Herman Schroder are believed drowned, while eight others were captured by Marines and waterfront patrols.
