The 1800 ton American Star Line liner Algonquin flying the American flag was sunk last Monday with no warning during wartime hostilities. Captain Norberg led nine American crew aboard. no lives were reported lost. Dispatches say shell fire from a German submarine caused the loss.

Six workers were killed in an explosion at the Aetna Explosive smokeless powder plant in Emporium Pennsylvania. A second blast hit the cotton storage plant later. Officials suspect a plot to destroy the factory facilities.
Nevada's metal value rose 52 percent from 1915 to 1916 totaling about 52,000,000 dollars with copper up 134 percent and zinc up 57 percent while gold fell 22 percent.
