The American army in France reports heavy artillery activity on the Toul sector with American shells destroying at least five gas projector groups. U S forces raided German positions reaching the second line, killing several enemy soldiers while taking no prisoners.
March 1 report from the merchant line steamer Kershaw with over 100 passengers sent a distress signal and reported grounding off the southern New England coast. Tugs were dispatched to provide assistance as the vessel ran aground during dense fog.
Washington March 13 The waterway advisory committee of the Railroad Administration grows from three to five members with Calvin Tompkins former Dock Commissioner of New York and port facilities student and M J Sanderson of New Orleans manager of the Leyland Bleamship line appointed to the panel.
Roy R Mumma of Jeanette Pa, once living on twenty three cents daily while a Carnegie Tech student, now spends about thirty two cents. After Tech he found work, saved one hundred dollars, married, and entered radiomechanics Veavila Hon service. His diet includes bread milk cereal cocoa fruit eggs meat gelatin margarine and peanut butter.
In Tiffin Ohio Marel 14 Mr and Mrs Valentine Weber and their five children were found eating breakfast in the same room where a dead child with tuberculosis lay. A police officer arriving at the home observed the body only a few feet from the dining table. The Weber residence is a single family dwelling. The father had recently been probated from court for supporting the family.

Eureka Nevada March 2 1918 J E Sexton owner of the Eureka and Palisade railroad condemns saloons and urges a summer clean up to restore town order He threatens limited trains while demanding municipal reform and cooperation from Eureka residents and state authorities to part ways with the railroad and its controversial operations.
Oneida Ohio March 1 Mrsay Casale Denney, a full blooded Indian, has given three of her sons to the service of Uncle Sam in the present war and says a fourth will go as soon as he is old enough. In the window of her home she displays a three star service flag presented to her by the chairman of the Brown county regional advisory board.
In Du Ho i Pa on March 12 authorities aim to clear Clearfield county of stray dogs. Fines of 25 dollars plus costs will be imposed on owners who let their dogs roam at large.
A tannery chief bookkeeper confessed to setting the Wood City factory fire after misappropriating over 4000 dollars. Investigators found bank deposits matching the stolen sum. She received a ten year prison sentence.

Senator Charles J. Henderson of Nevada has been elected chairman of the Senate mines committee. A dairy farm birth near Bilerrton reports a hairless calf, expected to mature into a healthy animal before sale.
Handy Coal Mine Welsh West Virginia March 13 report says Hirown's Creek district high school sits on a coal ledge and the janitor digs coal from the surface in the school yard, eliminating shortages.
The Croix de Guerre for bravery on the battlefield has been awarded to A Strechike Jr of Denver. He earned the decoration for carrying a wounded companion from a tet feld under heavy German fire.
In Denver on March 13 the Colorado state food administration ads launched a campaign urging cut tins and the storing of more ice to conserve fuel that would be used in producing fee.
The meeting at Bosworth Hall on March 13 urged stopping trade with Germany after the war unless Germany becomes a democracy. Local merchants and officials recorded opposition to postwar commerce with Germany if non democratic rule persists.
In St Louis on March 13 Fred Fulton and his manager left for Kansas City to sign for a championship bout with Jess Willard. A telegram from J C Miller says Willard agreed to meet Fulton on July Fourth. A New Orleans promoter offered $120000 for the fight with Fulton agreeing to take one third of the receipts per Mike Collins.

First Lieutenant L. J. Maloney of New Haven serving with the 103d U S Infantry in France is to receive what is billed as the longest letter ever written to a serviceman overseas. About 125 friends joined to compose a letter over one hundred feet long after Maloney complained that few letters came from home.
Green Bay March 13 Miss Martina Heynen nineteen has sworn in and awaits formal call to duty as the first girl telephone operator for the American expeditionary forces in France. She is from Green Bay and will report to boards in France.
