London reports the opening of Germanys new submarine campaign at midnight sinking two armed British steamers the Thornaby of 1781 tons and the Malvina of 1244 tons. The Thornaby crew drowned. Malvina fate unspecified. Insurance rates on boats rise sharply.
New York dispatch reports plans of American forts found on two Germans, Richard Vonarend and Rudolph Von Kracht, who pose as German lieutenants. They were arrested on charges of using the mails to defraud and were said to have conducted a systematic campaign of begging. Bail was set at $5000.
Fifteen thousand British trainees at a Sydney camp mutinied on February 15 after drill hours rose from 36 to 40 a week. One soldier was killed and six injured before order was restored. Rioters attacked fifteen Greek and German stores near Liverpool station as guards were driven off.
