Fire Destroys Two Cottages in Elko
Yesterday afternoon a fire at about five o'clock destroyed one cottage and badly damaged another at the south end of town. The loss is estimated at 1500 dollars, owned by Thomas Jayo. Firefighters lacked sufficient hose pressure. leaks and a faulty first joint hindered water flow. A second line from a hydrant nearer the depot saved the second building. The author blames hose condition rather than the water company and urges replacement of worn hose and proper reel handling.

Tom Critchley Fixes Pump On Van Drilen Ranch
Elko Water company manager Tom Critchley repaired a gasoline pump west of town at the Van Drilen ranch. Ralph Brown noted the pump sent a four inch stream and could not lower the well, but Critchley resumed work and restored operation. Diggers deepened the well through hard pan to gravel and a loose layer, with water lifted about 25 feet. Brown expects a fine alfalfa crop on the forty acre patch this year.
