Special to The Independent reports Sembrhet near fall as Austrian forces storm the last Russian defenses. Allies plan evacuation of the besieged city. Wounded are moved by carloads as German Austrian armies aim to push toward Lemberg Galicia.
In Elko the Bradley Opera House hosted flag fitting exercises for three flags to be presented by the four Women’s Relief Corps to the battleship Nevada. A patriotic program followed, with music, a vocal solo by Mrs. Z T Wheeler, and an address praising the flag and country. The flags depart for Ely then Carson City, with strong calls to unity and national ideals, invoking Lincoln and independence.
Veteran oration praises Civil War and World War deeds, recalling Lee, Grant, Sherman, Jackson, and Sheridan. Nevada women donate blue flag standards and naval ensigns to the battleship Nevada, honoring mothers, pioneers, and national memory.
In Atlanta June 21 a mob threatens to seize the governor after Leo Frank is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Mary Phagan. The governor commutes the sentence to life in obscurity, while saloons close and police struggle to quell unrest. Conley’s testimony and alleged bias cited amid claims of a wrongful conviction.
Elko defeated Golconda 9 to 0 as pitcher D Manning hurled a full game. Dell struck out 17 and Meriethswood impressed at short, while McParlane- and Manning-led infield work held Golconda scoreless. Next Sunday Elko hosts Winnemucca with reduced-rate tickets available.
Five minutes from completion, a new house being built by Mrs. E A Keith faced a damaging fire Sunday afternoon. Two Italian children aged five to seven were seen near the carpenters head as smoke appeared. Game Warden Charles Mood and Hugh Jones of Lind helped with water to extinguish the flames, likely saving the house. Pett from Carlin stops at Hotel Mayer.
Hitting leaders Hanks Wright Merithew and Manning paced a nine inning game with 30 at bats for Golconda and 20 for Wilkon. Manning struck out 17 while OConnell fanned 8. Errors by Quigley Burns Kint Hogan Kidd and Bruce. Time of game 11 hours 45 minutes.
Special to The Independent reports a Joliet Illinois riot at Joliet penitentiary where inmates demanded vengeance against a black trusty accused of murdering Mrs. Edmund Allen, wife of the warden, whose body was found in the prison.
Detroit report notes the Windsor Ontario armory was dynamited today with heavy property and munitions damage. Police search for a German spy as officials investigate the incident and potential implications for regional security.
The Lindsay Concert at the Wix ham theater Saturday night drew a large audience. Child prodigy Roma Lindsay, aged eleven, played three difficult pieces to much applause, with acclai m from critics. Accompanist Joe Henderson, son of Mr and Mrs John Henderson, impressed as an emerging talent. The juvenile quartet Roma Lindsay, Saris Lindsay, Carle Ewen and Dilly Valkenburg performed thrice, while a mandolin group of fifteen played well. Attorney Harold Hale received an ovation for his violin solo. Mrs Lindsay expressed gratitude for public patronage and Lois A Clayton and George S Clayton arrived from their Ten Mila ranch to stay at the Commercial.
