G. G. Garcia began tan hides with sagebrush bark in an experiment to develop a new Nevada industry. Two to three light hides used. about forty days to judge success. Workers gathered sagebrush. bark processed in a single vat while a leather salesman praised the result. Leather from tan bark takes eighty to ninety days versus thirty days for acid methods, but is said to yield superior quality. If successful, Nevada could stop exporting hides and begin producing leather locally.
