Washington reports a caveat to the British foreign office asserting that America will insist on rights under international law in prize court proceedings. The stance rejects any restraint by British orders in council or municipal law against American citizens and ties the demand to protests over meat cargo detentions.
A formal contract was signed for building the Secret Pass road sixteen miles from Halleck toward Ruby Valley. Smith Spraggin Co of Salt Lake won the $9,980 bid. George Ames signed for the company, with a $5,000 surety bond posted. Work to start promptly, with 60 to 75 men, and an expected completion in under 90 days. Spraggin may visit in person after an earlier accident.
United Press reports Liberty Bell Day at the Panama Pacific exposition with crowds, ceremonies, and Champ Clark delivering the principal address. The bell arrived in California after a cross country trip, escorted by troops and citizens, with stops at Marysville and Sacramento before Oakland.
A mad coyote charged a hay rake driver on the C Glaser ranch near Elburz while he rode a rake drawn by a horse. Bystanders shouted but could not deter the animal until it dove into a ditch and fled. Search parties found no trace of the coyote the next day. Local ranchers warn coyotes are common and dangerous around Elburz and Elko.
An official Bellef society appeal lists French casualties from the war’s start to June 1, 1915 totaling 1.4 million. Of these, about 400,000 are killed, 700,000 wounded, and 300,000 taken prisoner, as the latest official estimates across all powers engaged in the conflict.
Humboldt Star reports Superintendent F J Button arrived from Kelley creek noting hay cutting finished and stacking under way. The crop quality is better and yield larger than last year. Haying expands to Bullhead and U S ranches with a large harvest expected. C S river ranch crop is two thirds of average.
Secretary Daniels announced the Edison advisory board members would be released on Monday. It is learned that Charles Steinmetz, the renowned electrical engineer, would probably be among those named.
Sacramento July 17 The state board of education accepts a history bid but requires revision to feature biographies of Clara Berton Frances Willard Harriet Beecher Stowe Julia Ward Howe and other notable women to give them greater prominence in California school histories.
The Wigwam theater presents a juvenile quartette led by Mrs. Lindsay featuring Billy ann Valkenburg Cozie Ewen and the Lindsey kids. They will sing between moving pictures tonight and the ad urges audiences to attend.
In San Francisco Champ Clark urged peace with honor and a strong defense. He called for an enlarged military, doubling West Point and Annapolis enrollments, and using surplus officers to train youth and militia to deter foreign powers.
Attorney E G Caine from Elko visited Wells last Saturday for water matter business. Rev E H Price of Elko will conduct Ep iscopalian church service in Clover valley next Sunday at 2 pm. Thomas Hunter, Elko stockman, spent part of this week in Wells, reportedly to buy cattle.

Wells Herald reports editor’s quip about H A McMurtrey Elko constable receiving 28 50 for killing a dog. Says one dollar per dog killed leaves question of the missing half dog and what kind of dog it was, prompting a facetious remark.
Near the Lamoille summit a brake failed sending an eight-horse team and a sixteen thousand pound flour load down a steep grade. Driver Will Woodring kept them on the road, guiding Tom and Jerry, Hawk, Shorty, Mike, Bird and Prince through a perilous bend, risking life to save the team and load.
Miss Dysart a Presbyterian missionary from Korea visiting Elko will speak at the Presbyterian church tomorrow detailing life customs and progress of Koreans. She will address Sunday school children at 10 o clock and church services at 11 am and 730 pm with an invitation extended to the public.
In Los Angeles on July 17 the body of a nearly nude man was found on the altar steps at St. Augustine’s Catholic church near Palms. Identified as L. Miller of Los Angeles, the victim had a cloth gag, missing watch, and blunt force marks. Clothes lay on the altar rail, indicating possible transport from a cornfield. caretaker Lauren Machaco found him. coroner’s jury concluded death by chloroform. Whether murder or suicide remains undetermined.
The Independent promotes a limited offer giving a $2.50 ironing board and a year’s subscription for six dollars. Supplies are scarce and the paper urges prompt action to secure the gift.
New York reports a submarine chased the Cunarder Orunda for an hour on July 9 and fired six shells, all ineffective, as the liner outran the attack. In a separate incident near Lamoille summit, Woodring’s flour wagon flipped on a steep grade but he and the horses survived with minor damage. He fixed the wagon, loaded again, and reached Elko by nine that night.
G S Garcia plans to send men to gather sagebrush for his tannery and test its tannic acid value in a vat to gauge cost savings versus imported oak tan bark. He notes potential home production of saddles from locally tanned hides as the Elko tannery advances.
London June 20 The graphic account from a British soldier reports a dog fight three thousand feet up above a Northern France camp. A German taube was destroyed as British planes pursued the marauder dropping bombs before a fatal fall.
