Benjamin Franklin Schappelle, longtime head of romance languages at Pennsylvania College Gettysburg, has accepted an assistant professor post in the same department at the University of Nevada in Reno. He will assist Professor Charles Goggle, newly appointed acting head, and brings degrees from Dickinson College, the University of Pennsylvania, Berlin, Heidelberg, and study in France and Italy.
Deputy Sheriff M Lemon seized a man with a paper covered in hieroglyphics. Judges and auditors guessed languages, a cleaner suggested folding it. When folded as advised, the writing became clear, and readers could interpret it.

Foreign affairs today notified the American embassy that Italian law prevents extradition of Cocchi, the self confessed murderer of Ruth Cruger. Cocchi killed Ruth Cruger in New York, buried her body in a cellar beneath his buckle shop, then fled to Italy after confessing to Italian authorities. Rome reported July 14 that the minister announced this development.

A black boy, Jean Powers, reports a white man, intoxicated and searching for his hat, tumbled into the river behind River street near Third. Despite near midnight and morning searches, no body is found. The man’s identity remains unknown as of press time.
