Berlin reports a German naval victory against the Russian Baltic fleet on June 29 30 as torpedo boats attacked destroyers off Haufringe. Fierce engagements followed with Russian ships damaged and debris in the sea though the squadrons lost sight of each other in dense fog.

Dover July 5 The American steamship Luckenbach 2793 tons sailing from San Francisco to Leith with a million dollar barley cargo sank after a collision with the British steamship Eddystone off Downs. The crew were saved after heroic actions by nearby British vessels amid dense fog and rough seas.
W G Gibbs, who recently sold his Clover Valley ranch to Weeks Brothers, bought the Truett Land and Livestock Co. holdings on T Creek forty miles north of Wells. The sale includes all the ranch horses and about sixteen hundred acres. The cattle remain with the Truett company as they plan to acquire more northern county ranches. The purchase price was not disclosed.
Eighteen Arizona bootleggers met in Oatman to organize for protection against unfair competition by nonresidents. They voted to boycott allies of 49 camp scabs and threatened legal action if needed. Prices at Oatman set well above Needles and other markets, with whiskey at about $2 per bottle and other goods proportionally higher.
An enormous cyclone rips through Atlanta, New Orleans, Galveston, and nearby ports, halting rail lines and wrecking ships. Wind speeds reach 60–80 mph as cities brace for broader impact and residents cling to seawalls amid rising fears of a repeat catastrophe.
Bootleggers praise Prohibition agents as friends while commissioning a defense fund to cover fines and bail. A five passenger auto struck a boy near the bridge west of Cross Roads in Lamoille Valley yesterday around 7 pm. The youth was badly bruised but survived without broken bones and walked away unaided.
The Lamoille celebration of American independence drew a near thousand crowd in the grove with sports, a baseball game, horse racing, and lively betting. Supreme Judge P A McCarran gave the day’s oration endorsing Wilson policies guiding the nation toward peace.

Redding California July 5 The Southern Pacific announced a raise from 1.75 to 2.00 per day for Keedon hands on the Shaeta division. About five hundred men are affected. The raise takes effect today. The increase is attributed to labor shortages and rising demand for different laborers.
New York reports 524 infantile paralysis cases and 126 deaths since June 26 as thousands flee to the mountains and other areas beyond reach. City physicians work day and night in trials of treatments seeking a cure, with many victims left permanently injured. The disease mainly strikes children and its cause remains undetermined.
Thomas McKenna Jr. of Carlin, son of Roadmaster McKenna, was seriously injured while hunting fifty miles north of Carlin yesterday. While removing a shotgun from the car it discharged, tearing part of a finger and badly lacerating the other hand palm. The injury likely permanent though hand functions remain. Zormie Linebarger had a narrow escape as the shot passed through his side.
Washington July 5 General Carranza delivered to the State Department a notably softened reply to the President's ultimatum. He pledges honor of Mexico to avoid new incidents and asks reciprocal restraint from the United States. He cites prisoner releases at Carrizal as proof of sincerity and urges withdrawal of American troops as Mexico’s right. He accepts Wilson's view on frontier insecurity and seeks further talks to solve the international issue.
Washington July 5 The Comptroller of the Currency issued a request for a report on the condition of national banks as of the close of business June 30.
