Word was received yesterday that Mrs Samuel McDowell, taken to Livermore California for medical treatment, passed away Saturday. Her physicians pronounced her case incurable. She was wife of Dr Samuel McDowell and had lived in Biko more than twenty years. She leaves two children, Mrs G J Griffith and Irwin McDowell, with sincere sympathy from the community.
William Kennett, clerk of the supreme court, received an iblegram with the single word France confirming the safe arrival in France of his nephew, Lieutenant Ralph Kaines Carson Newa.
The district court upheld the postmaster general’s power to exclude The Milwaukee Leader from second class mailing under the espionage act. The Milwaukee Socialist Democrat Publishing Co. and Victor Berger were involved in the case, marking a key test of government authority to limit circulation under the new law. Mrs Billet, long a patient at Littlefield hospital, is improving and plans to return home soon.

Toure Halles of Elko County registered twice for the selective draft with serial numbers 688 and 897. A drawing held yesterday afternoon by the adjutant general assigned number 897 to Ralles Carson in a bid to place him for service.
Reports from Petrograd on January 16 describe an automobile carrying Lenine in which a shooting occurred. One party member was slightly injured while Lenine was unhurt. The Tra ss was badly damaged but all aboard are safe.
Charles Crown, a renowned South Fork stockman, travels to Elko today on a business trip to discuss cattle ventures and market plans.
Dr Charles Hood S will accompany Captain C. W. West as he leaves Elko to begin army life at Fort Riley Kansas. West, recently commissioned in the medical department, will receive months of ambulances work training and may be sent to France or a camp in the United States. He plans to return after the war and resume practice with Hood & West, as Elko bids farewell to a leading local physician and citizen.
San Francisco January 16 Mayor James Rolph, a descendant of Pocahontas, received a letter from Chief Telotiokwawakou, head of the Council for the Protection of American Indians. The chief commends the mayor and endorses the city’s leadership, noting that American blood flows in his veins and reflects honesty and fearlessness in governance.
In a France frontline letter John J. O Connor of K Company Eleventh United States Infantry derides German civilization as far behind and vows harsh retaliation. He reflects on trench warfare and a wounded comrade, insisting Germans deserve severe punishment.
