London dispatch reports renewed nation wide contempt for Germany after the sinking of the Laconia. Survivors recount escape and British claims of preparedness saving lives. The tribute focuses on Miss Inez Harris, wife of a U S Army officer, as the sole woman to abandon ship.
The first details emerged in the $40 960 suit filed by Judge G F Talbot against attorney C E Mack. District Judge Mark R Averill sitting in Tonopah set Talbot to answer Mack’s demurrer to the complaint. Talbot seeks 50 000 for alleged injury to his good name and reputation as former president of the Nevada Fire Insurance Co, accusing Mack of circulating damaging statements among stockholders about his management.
Joseph Buckley, a Comstock resident for 54 years and a pioneer Virginia City painter, died Monday night. He edited Territorial Enterprise from 1868 to 1891 and was twice elected Nevada state printer. Survived by widow and brother John W. Eckley of the Bank of California in Virginia City. Buckley had not done printing for years and had engaged in mining.
A suit for over 200000 was filed Monday in Reno District Court by RS. Pa and Marie Olive Page against Mark Walser and Frank Margrave. The plaintiffs allege the defendants used their funds to acquire rights in the Nevada Packard Mines company and other properties.
Rancher Albert Hankins of Hylton district plans to trial a small tractor on a mowing machine this coming summer. He notes tractors work elsewhere and expects greater efficiency than teams. In Elko county large horse stables cost hefty upkeep nine to ten months yearly, so a successful tractor could cut costs. Hankins’ experiment will be watched with interest.
Washington February 28 The Summary civil service bill carrying 155000000 dollars in appropriations passed the House this afternoon without a record vote.
The senate approved a bill granting 500 000 acres to each listed western state for sale or lease to fund public road construction. Lands will be selected within a year and sold at auctions up to 640 acres per unit, with a 25 000 acre limit per entity. Leases may run five years or more.
A measure introduced by Assemblyman Ducker mandates displaying hides when carcasses are offered for sale to prove stock origin. Slaughterhouses must keep records and noncommercial sellers must exhibit hides. violation carries a fine up to 50 to 500 dollars or up to five months in jail or both. The bill was sent to the committee on agriculture.
The liner Finland arrived at New York from Liverpool this morning, after a voyage begun February 18. The ship carried many passengers and passed safely through submarine-infested waters with an uneventful journey reported by officers.
Germany admits holding four American consular officials as hostages until all German consuls depart the United States. Washington officials decline comment while a formal U.S. demand for release is anticipated.
Berkeley February 28 Ten definitions of love culled from literary history are presented in the University of California Pelican periodical. Entries include Shakespeare sweet folly Balzac passion and Thaw madness among others, each linked to an era.
Senate education panel introduced a bill to provide 80000 for the construction and equipment of a state normal school building at the university. A commission of the governor, controller, and treasurer would oversee the project and hire an architect by September 1, 1917, funded by a five mill tax on valuations.
A bill introduced in the assembly by Duecker and Ttamonda aims to make cattle rustling a stricter offense. It covers harsher punishments and governs the sale of cattle hides to curb this dangerous occupation.

London Feb 28 German authorities will not grant satisfaction to the Dutch government over the sinking of seven Dutch vessels. The Hague dispatches report no apology or compensation and stress the protest remains unanswered.
Senator Keddie introduced a state fair appropriation bill proposing 6000 annually for two years to pay premiums offered by the state fair association and 4000 for repairs to the association buildings and grounds in Churchill County. The measure was sent to the Ways and Means Committee and no combat is anticipated.
Berlin reports that German flyers downed eight enemy aeroplanes, with six destroyed on the western front. The announcement came this morning confirming air combat losses for the day.
