Berlin announces a two mile front breakthrough near Cousengoyo north of Verdun with about 3000 prisoners. Northern Avevere front shows eleven miles of action with penetrations and large captures of troops and munitions. Upper Alsace reports a 700 by 100 yard French position seized. air battles follow. Paris notes allied views of a final western front push.

British steamer Strathclyde badly damaged at Queenstown

The British steamer Strathclyde of 4117 tons register en route from Philadelphia to Manchester was towed into Queenstown this morning in a badly damaged condition. An internal explosion is suspected and no crew remains aboard. Allies bombarded a German railway near the Belgian frontier and 114 bombs were dropped.

Land Withdrawn for Irrigation Project in Nevada Valleys

The State Land Board filed in the U S Land Office the application of B E Merritt of Duluth Minnesota withdrawing from entry lands in Cloverland and Independence Nevada totaling thousands of acres. The lands feature sage brush and meadow areas with shallow water tables and irrigation potential via pumping from natural underground water conduits. The Merritt associated company plans to reclaim and irrigate by tapping these water sources and improving drainage to spread water across soils for productive crops, with offices to be maintained in Salt Lake City Elko and other Nevada points.
