A fire swept a quarter mile through Fall River’s business district destroying about fifty buildings including two large blocks. No lives were lost and most of the tenement district was saved. Losses are estimated at 2 million dollars.
The Dutch liner Bandoeng of 5851 tons register struck a mine in the English Channel today and was badly damaged. Five tugs are assisting her into port.
Washington February 16 The resignation of Ambassador Maryes has been accepted and takes effect upon the arrival of a successor in Petrograd There is no indication who will be appointed and the administration is at a loss for reasons behind the resignation.
The Board of County Commissioners opened bids for a chemical fire engine for Elko. American LaFrance offered multiple types from 6900 to 9500 dollars. Seagrove proposed 4 cylinder and pumping variants up to 9500 dollars. Deysher & La Fargue offered a motor driven triple combination at 8000 dollars. The last company's rep once served eight years as San Francisco fire chief.
Berlin reports three British assaults against positions south of Ypres were repulsed. French attempts to regain trenches northwest of Tahuse also failed.
William M. Crosson, born April 6 1874 in Starr Valley, was laid to rest today. The rancher and stockgrower died after typhoid fever with rheumatism, leaving a grieving father and mother, a brother John W. Crosson, and three sisters, with the community sharing their sorrow.
Percy Levi an insurance man in Oakland attempted to secure a fiancé by threats and swallowed poison after she refused. He died later but said he did not intend to take his life. In San Francisco a runaway trolley car collided with another car leaving two seriously injured.
A major early morning fire on the New York waterfront destroyed two large steamers Bolton Castle of 12,000 tons and Pacific of 10,000 tons at Atlantic docks in Brooklyn. Both were loaded with oil, cotton and other war munitions for Russia. Loss estimated over 5 million dollars. Arson suspected. investigation begun. Casualties not yet confirmed.
Dean George F. James of the University of Nevada leaves for the east on university business. He will recruit summer session instructors for Reno, address Utah faculty, and attend the National Education Association meeting in Detroit to arrange a cooperative plan for shared lecturers among mountain states universities. He will also handle university business in New York and Washington. French Aeroplane Active reports thirteen French planes dropping 150 bombs on Stumnitza Cantomments causing fires and destruction.
Erzerum fell to Russian troops after two weeks of assaults. Grand Duke Nicholas led the capture from a strong Turkish defense of about 150,000 men. The war department officially announced the victory and noted a strategic move toward Lake Van to sever German routes to Mesopotamia.
Ambassador Bernstorff delivered Berlin’s acceptance of President Wilson’s changes with minor exceptions. Washington expects U.S. approval and a final settlement by Friday.
Admiral Grant told the House Committee on naval affairs that the nation should build 111 eight hundred ton submarines eight battle cruisers and twelve scout cruisers at once to be prepared for defense.
Dr. Charles F. Parks, a noted optometrist, was electrocuted in his private garage when a faulty electric light wire delivered a 220 volt current. His wife discovered him dead, his hand still gripping the cord. The incident occurred in San Francisco on February 16.
Paris reports French cruisers have sunk three German submarines in the Atlantic.
New York February 16. The resolutions committee endorsed Whitman administration in a secondary plank. Elihu Root was endorsed for president but not binding on Chicago delegates. Delegates at large named to the national convention are Governor Whitman Senator Wadsworth Frederick C Tanner and Elon B Brown. The platform denounces Wilson and backs preparedness and current foreign policies.
Tom Jones manager for Jess Willard says the March 17 fight with Moran will be postponed due to Willard’s illness. He notifies Tex Rickard that a delay is likely, with March 24 or March 31 suggested. Willard remains home with a bad cold as talks continue.
Pittsburg February 14 Secretary Daniels was attacked as a menace to national safety by S Stanwood Menken president of the national security league at the engineers society banquet. He blamed Daniels for planning a ten year navy promissory note and urged consideration of Wilson's re election amid concerns over naval policy. Negotiations continued for a New York staged fight on March 25.
