Washington reports anxiety over Ambassador Gerard not making contact for four days. The state department has no word on his detention in Berlin. Secretary Lansing remains skeptical that Germany holds him for any reason and says he would be surprised if such a move occurred.
A telegram to County Treasurer Miller announced the death of Steve Henley, longtime Elko businessman. He died today in Mountain View California after a prolonged illness, his wife at his side. Remains expected to be brought to Elko for interment. Henley was a well known member of several lodges and valued by the community. Family and citizens extend condolences while fuller details await.
A February 9 report from Rotterdam notes calm in Berlin after the news of Germany and the United States breaking relations. An American traveler said Americans in the streets spoke English openly without attracting notice.
The toll of ships sunk around the danger zone of the British Isles since the start of the new submarine campaign has reached seventy two. Only two ships were reported sunk today.
J P Martin of the forest service arrives from Ogden to inspect routes from Elko to Jarbidge Nevada. He will meet B G McBride and C H Kendall to select the most feasible year round path.
