Washington, Feb 7. Senator Works of California denounces President Wilsons stand on the German submarine war, condemns inviting neutrals to break relations, and warns the move could drag the US into a bloody conflict. He blasts preparedness propaganda and urges keeping ships and citizens out of the danger zone.
London reports King George opening Parliament with a pledge to continue the war until final victory. He rejects peace prospects, demands reparations for past actions, and seeks future security. Special arrangements were made for wounded soldiers to attend. the king wore Khaki.
County highway board opened bids for a Holt 75 caterpillar engine and two trailers. The Holt engine, chosen by vote, costs 5000 with six trailers planned for a total of 3240 dollars. Verdi Lumber bid 600 dollars per trailer, six trailers expected to save 360 dollars. G. M. Gowers, the Honey King of Lamoille, visited Elko yesterday.
By order of the Elko and Carlin town board the old Elko fire equipment was sold to Carlin for 200 dollars. J W Puett presented a petition from Carlin residents urging the transfer. The board unanimously approved selling two hose carts the hook and ladder wagon and other items for the nominal 200 dollars. Elko installed a modern triple combination engine rendering the old gear obsolete. The board said Carlin should pay a nominal sum and the equipment will serve Carlin for years.
Washington reports the German government admitted delaying Ambassador Helb Erhardt’s passport as a suspected tactic to pressure the United States. The State Department says Germany aims to secure fair treatment for Ambassador Bernstorff by using the passport hold as leverage, and the U.S. will seek explanations through Spain about the incident.
John M. Couch faces a preliminary hearing in Oklahoma City on the January double murder of Miss Nellie Dunn and Professor Rowland. Prosecutors expect binding over to the grand jury. Mrs. Couch urged the prosecutor to seek the death penalty, warning of influence aiding his release.
It is reported here that the Petrograd stock exchange has reopened for the first time since the beginning of the war.
Starr Valley rancher P. McMullen married Mary Dean a Californian former teacher in San Jose California on the fourth of this month. The couple honeymooned in San Francisco and will reside at the groom’s Starr Valley ranch after returning. Local friends extend best wishes as the union ends bachelorhood rumors.
Copenhagen reports that Denmark Holland Norway and Sweden will not commit to joining in breaking off diplomatic relations with Germany. The neutral bloc’s stance remains divided as diplomatic talks proceed.
Washington Feb 7 The American Red Cross named Prof Archibald Cary Coolidge of Harvard as special representative to study its work in Europe. John Le Saltonstall of Beverly Mass named director of a new northeastern division with headquarters in Boston. The Red Cross reports 10 000 physicians and 7 100 nurses available in the event of war.
London Feb 7 A famous French artist Michael Cazin was killed and his wife seriously injured when a bomb exploded on a ship anchored in a French port. Fourteen seamen died in the blast.
Portland dispatch reports Oregon, home to the world’s largest salmon canning district, facing a famine of favorite fish. High eastern prices have drained canned stocks and even fresh salmon are being shipped east for bigger profits.
Secretary Baker ruled that German crews aboard interned ships may destroy their own vessels and do damage to another international steamer if no other shipping is harmed or waters obstructed. The United States will act to protect its interests accordingly.
Special to the Independent reports a stormy session where the Senate passed the Stone resolution endorsing the break with Germany. The final ballot was seventy eight to five, and the five dissenters have not been publicly identified.
President Wilson signed the commission appointing Theodore Roosevelt Jr. a major of infantry in the officers' reserve corps. Roosevelt had trained at the Plattsburg camp and joins the reserve cadre amid ongoing Mobilization.
London reports nine ships sunk today by submarines. The tally includes one Italian, one French, one Russian, and the remainder British, indicating a broad-reaching wartime loss across naval flags.

United States District Attorney Preston prompted Judge Hunt to raise bail for Franz Bopp former German consul BE. H. Von Schak former vice consul and Lieutenant Von Brincker military attaché from ten thousand to twenty five thousand dollars. They had been on bail since their conviction and were ordered to provide the added bail by five o'clock today.
Washington reports Ambassador Willard in Madrid says Gerard is believed to be out of Germany after receiving a message from Gerard in Berne Switzerland. The State Department is pursuing further inquiries.
Amsterdam dispatches report a Selhaus obel munition plant explosion causing about two hundred deaths. The majority of the victims were women, and the disaster has stunned London with a large loss of life.
