He earned fame as the Boston Strong Boy and a public figure whose rugged style defined early boxing.
Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, both anarchists, surrendered at the U S Marshals office in New York under a federal court order. The surrender follows the Supreme Court decision affirming their con viction for conspiring to interfere with the selective service act. Berkman stated Bolsheviks in Russia would demand their return without prison terms.
In municipal court Judge Doughty showed leniency to J H Cashin a former railway employee charged with drinking spree. Cashin promised to return to the shops and abandon John Barleycorn while the judge noted the railroad needs workers and gave him freedom on a pledge to resume duty.
