London dated December 28 reports General Haig submitted a list of personnel serving on the western front named for special mention. The list published in the London Gazette includes many Americans attached to the United States Nursing Corps.

In France on Christmas Eve and near a town during a moonlight raid, German aviators dropped bombs killing two American privates and a corporal of the engineer corps. A private was wounded. The incident occurred as American engineers worked in trenches on the French front.
Wichita police adopt plain clothes for all officers except the trade squad. Safety Director W. Zickeroone approved the plan saying he did not want officers to advertise themselves to those who might avoid the law.
Washington date December 28 director general Mc Adoo drafts the railroad war board into government service to devise unified operation plans for approval. The move marks the start of government management of the rail system at noon today.
Soldiers under Menshinsky commissioners surround and seize all private banks in Petrograd including a National City Bank of New York branch. Manager Stevens of the New York bank is arrested and held briefly. Menshinsky alleges the banks made incorrect reports.
New York story about Eddie, a well known Broadway bartender in a popular parlour, who consoles a customer annoyed by price rises. Eddie claims booze has jumped about one third and predicts more raises will deter drinkers until prohibition ends. The young man exits pondering.
Washington December 24 reported the ages of the new war council generals average about sixty years. Noted ages include Chief of Staff Diss 64 Major General Crozier 63 Major General Weaver 63 Major General Crowder 68 Major General Sharpe 57 General Scott 64 and General Black 62.
Washington dispatch reports a powerful earthquake at six last night destroying parts of Guatemala City. Aftershocks continue and property damage remains high. Thousands lose shelter but no casualties among Americans or other foreigners were reported.
Farm laborers in Riverhead demand $100 monthly and keep as a condition for working next year. Farmers fear crop prospects under these terms, noting that normally labor costs run about $30 a month and keep, though some paid up to $60 last season.

Frederick Jatoba of Pittburg was aboard the steamer Campania when torpedoed on August 6 and now lies in a German prison camp in good health. A postcard says he is alive and well with six other American prisoners, all described as good fellows.

Whitehall Illinois December 2 two trade school students publish a monthly magazine titled the Boys Herald. Russell A. Tones fourteen years old serves as editor in chief while Charles H Birdsell fifteen is distant editor. They write editiorials set type and run the press. The magazine includes serial stories and a classified advertisement and already lists a subscriber in Hilo Hawaii.
In Ouray and nearby towns along the Uncompahgre National Forest, deer elk antelope and mountain sheep roam freely as state game commission and the U S forest service pursue protection efforts. Herds have grown tame and are frequently seen grazing at haystacks and approaching ranch buildings.

Elko welcomes Prof. Welday and his wife Edith McCormick who returned yesterday. She is from Youngstown Ohio and he from Steubenville Ohio. They wed December 21 in Salt Lake City. Both graduates of Ohio University 1912. Edith taught drawing in Parkersburg and Chicago. She belongs to Chi Omega. Welday leads local schools, Stanford graduate, Phi Delta Kappa member. May they stay long in our midst.
Elko residents praised the Masons for a successful annual dance at the Bradley theater. The floor was well prepared, music pleasing, and a large crowd of Elko’s best dancers attended in finery. J. Armistead to visit from his ranch. Bradley Opera House show to start at 7:20 tonight.
Washington December 28 Director Ray Baker of the mint states he will not be a candidate to succeed Francis G. Newlands as United States senator. Governor Boyle is expected to make the appointment. Reports say the governor might resign to become the senator.
New York City faces probable strikes in several trades at the start of the year unless wage agreements are reached. Demands cover shirtwaist, cap, white goods, clothing cutters, restaurant and hotel workers and barbers with marine trades also strained.
In Kansas City Dec 28 a veteran named M William Sullivan declared he was too old to fight yet wished to support the war effort. He presented a pair of imported field glasses to a naval recruiting officer, saying he had read in newspapers that field glasses were needed. The donated glasses were of Chavalier make.
Hood River Oregon December 28. Apple peels and cores are becoming valued as tobacco material. Dried apple pomace will be used to mix with smoking blends, marking a shift from eastern fruit districts to local supply for over 16 varieties.
