London dispatches report a battle in southern Russia between Bolsheviki troops and Korniloff forces with conflicting outcomes. One account says Korniloff was defeated and wounded and his capture expected, while another states he repelled his opponents and remains at large.
Walter Garcia and Miss Kate Istac were married by Judge Taber in his chambers last evening. The couple, from leading Elko families, faced a delayed wedding after a failed attempt in San Francisco due to age issues. They return welcomed by families and friends as Mr. and Mrs. Garcia begin a hopeful life together.
In Rome the Hatian partia ment held a large demonstration after the premier cited Algeria�s declaration of war on Austria. The entire house rose and the galleries joined the crowd shouting Viva America Viva Watson. A separate note mentions an annual rabbit dune near Reno with meat to be distributed by the Salvation Army.
After an executive session ending at 5 am, labor leaders in St Paul and Minneapolis ordered all unions to quit work in sympathy with the striking trainmen. Secretary Baker coordinated with the president’s labor commission to halt in St Paul and pursue a strike settlement.
A telegram to Commander Pister of the Sicilian navy reports Austrian battleships sunk in the harbor at Trieste by an Italian torpedo craft during the night of December. The message confirms the incident and the dramatic naval action in the Adriatic coastal area.
The county commissioners named Miss Mattie J Keith to fill the unexpired term of RoW Hunter as county clerk. She filed a $20000 bond and took the office, with Mae McNamara as deputy and H C Sproule assisting until she is familiar with duties.
The thermometer fell to twenty degrees below zero in Sioux City last night setting a new local record for cold temperatures.
The Elko County Highway Board met December 6 1917 with J J Gregory I J Jones Fred C Voight W M Weathers B P Carville and S C Shirley present. Bills were approved for Manuel Urnita J J Gregory Elko Co House and many road contracts and bridge works. a petition to establish a county road along the Nevada Northern line was referred for hearing January 6 1918. multiple contracts with S C Shirley and partners for hauling and bridge work were ratified.
In the San Francisco district, Nevada led in full war recruitment quotas and total enlistments. The National Recruiter profile credits progressive methods and many one man recruiting stations for a district that has supplied 1,300 men since the war began, with New York and Chicago next.
The board confirms a contract between 8 C Shirley and C B Tremewan for hauling supplies as evidenced by BIT No 85 passed at the December meeting. Shirley to collect several bills returned by the owner and return them corrected for action at the next meeting. Continued on page four.
At a Home Guards meeting Captain Jensen announced the entire membership will be called out on Sunday December 23 at 2530 o’clock. He has drilled small squads and will resign them to squads from 150 volunteers ready to lead. Training aims to have all members drilled as a company by spring with platoon movements planned.
Front reports continuous artillery action along the entire line as war office confirms. Local meetings discuss arming company with Krag rifles, hiring a band leader, and planning a New Years dinner to boost guard morale with invited Civil War veterans and address by Captain Rowland and Thomas Short.
