The American destroyer Jacob Jones was torpedoed and sunk in the war zone on Thursday night with a large loss of life. Thirty seven survivors were rescued, and the navy reports indicate a two thirds fatality rate among her crew.
City officials met to consider liquor license applications and a railroad pipe line project. The board granted permission for Standard Oil to excavate and lay a pipe along specified alleys, reviewed numerous liquor licenses, and approved bills totaling $2,136.69. A recess was taken until Saturday evening at the Justice of Peace office.
Isabelle Jackson formerly Miss Isabelle Miller of Elko died after a brief illness at her Sparks home on 4th Street. She was 28 years old, wife of Engineer Eugene G. Jackson, and mother-to-be. The couple married in 1911 and resided in Sparks, where she was active in the Ladies' Society and local locomotive firemen group. Funeral set for Sunday at 2 PM from the Perking Gulling company parlors in Reno.

At a regular meeting of Elko Royal Arch Chapter No. 11 officers were elected. Names listed include A. L. McGinty as H. P. and J. C. Doughty as Secretary among others. The event sets the leadership for the coming term.

DuPont DeNemours Powder company reports new potash prospects at Columbus Marsh Nye county. Plans include sinking four 4000 foot wells as initial work after the marsh was opened October 2. Early drillings show brines with 3.5 percent soluble potash, with hopes of higher yields by penetrating 4000 feet.
A meeting of the Elko Home Guards is ordered to be held Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the courtroom by order of Captain G C Jensen and Secretary J C Doughty.
Halifax faces a forty mile gale and heavy snow as relief trains run into blockages. Fires are out, power scarce, and survivors endure a second night of cold and fear after the Thursday explosion and fire left the city in ruins.
Three Swedish workers at Masonic insulted Soldier Fred Jespersen on a Reno train. Enraged, the American serviceman, returning to his San Francisco unit, fought and defeated all three assailants. The Gardnerville Record lauds his actions as patriotic defense of the country.
Doctor Lee received a picture of his nephew serving in the United States Army. He was initially rejected for being underweight but was accepted after a second weighing showed he met the minimum weight. Between weighings the recruit drank as much water as possible. George and Henry Garat visit from White Rock ranch.
Wainwright an instrument man for Nevada state highways left Tonopah on November 20 bound for Carlin and has not been seen since. The department, his wife, and the Carlin assignment await word as letters and telegrams sent to him go unclaimed. Mrs. Wainwright, at Luning, lies prostrate with worry and anxiety.
Tonopah reports Junior Red Cross progress with high enthusiasm. The Red Cross banner is in the eighth grade room, a banner stand created by Emil Stubbs of seventh grade. Domestic science pupils prepare hominy to sell for Junior Red Cross funds.
The American consul at Tiflis reports a rumor that the former czar of Russia has escaped. The rumor is not confirmed.
