Coast guard stations at Race Point Peaked Hill and High Head reported heavy guns fired at 9 41 AM with no warships sighted. Navy officers suspected an active engagement though no definitive details emerged. Firing ceased after about thirty five minutes as warships nearby were not confirmed.
The Nevada Consolidated Copper Company employees raise funds to fly a 35 foot flag on an 80 foot flag pole atop a mountain near McGill. The flag will be hoisted as soon as the mast and foundation are ready, visible for miles along Steptoe Valley.
Senator Charles Curis of Kansas introduced a bill to prohibit futures dealings in wheat and corn by blocking mail and telegraph facilities along lines used against cotton futures. H.R. Culver is visiting from Deeth on a business trip.

London April 18 The weekly report of British shipping shows the loss of forty vessels. Nineteen ships were over 1 600 tons register nine under 1 600 tons and six fishing vessels were sunk by the submarine.

New York April 18 Sarah Bernhardt the noted actress was operated on here last night for a kidney condition. Doctors say she has a good fighting chance for recovery but her condition remains grave.
French troops advance east of Soissons and capture Chayonne and Chivy, reaching near Braye en Laonnois. German counterattacks in Champagne repelled with heavy losses. French claim 14,000 unwounded Germans captured since Monday. British gains north of St Quentin also announced.
