British forces drive a powerful attack at Arras surprising German positions. Reports note captured guns and knocked-out pieces, with German artillery largely silent. An unofficial dispatch from Canadian headquarters in Europe credits a young Texan who enlisted in Ontario with being the first to carry the American flag into battle in Europe during the Vimy Ridge assault. He went to Thelus with the flag on his bagonette and fell among the wounded.
The Elko Draper club met at Mrs. H L Bruce's home with Mrs. H A Castle as hostess. Members discussed Baby Day on May 4 with plans for children and mothers to participate. Western Consumers Day between April 14 and 21 was outlined along with home industry promotion.
Indian Andy, recently arrested for carving a tribesman, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to do great bodily injury. Originally charged with assault with intent to kill, he claimed a horseshoe nail was the weapon. The district attorney accepted the plea to avoid trial costs for the county.
Colorado attorney general files confession of error in the 1914 murder case of John R. Lawson former district president and International board member of the United Miners association He recommends freeing him from the charge and Lawson to be released on bond.
Washington April 11 Wilson met with Speaker and other leaders to confer on war measures. Representative Kitchin will pilot the war program through the House. Paris April 11 Lafayette Flying Squadron to switch from French to American uniform and carry the U S flag at the front.
The Senate approved the army appropriation bill to fund immediate officer training and civilian camps like Plattsburg. It carries 278 million dollars for the regular army and becomes available at once. Conference will be needed after minor Senate amendments.
Rev J M Snonder of the Presbyterian church united W E Moore and Miss Lucille Addy both of Salt Lake City in marriage this morning. The groom is a prominent wholesale lumber and box businessman. the bride is active in Salt Lake society. They departed on Southern Pacific trash No 10. May they enjoy a happy married life.
Chester Pa April 11 authorities focus on plotters after an Edystone Ammunitions explosion killed 122 and injured 125 to 150 mainly girls and young women. President Johnson of Baldwin Locomotive Works says it looks like a time clock bomb. Police freed two suspects, a father and son named Open, arrested last night.
Oscar T. Crosby of Warrenton Virginia was appointed assistant secretary of the treasury today. Crosby had recent ties to the American Commission of Relief in Belgium.
Chicago on April 11 Eugene Grubb an authority on potato matters urged Americans to conserve the nation's potato supply. Speaking before the Hamilton club he declared the potato helped Germany prolong the war by two years highlighting the need for rationing and thrift in food.
Washington April 11 A resolution introduced by Senator Sherman Republican would authorize the president to call onemillion volunteers and was laid on the table at his request.
The Elko county commissioners accepted the Independent's bid for county and Elko town printing. Only two bids were submitted and the Independent offered the lower price. The other bidder was asked to justify his higher bid and replied it would be impossible, yet the contract went to the Independent amid claims of public hatred and jealousy.
The Overland Trail Club reports continued growth with 16 new members named for enrollment and fees paid. The Elko branch membership rises to 236 as Benton J. Bangs Henry Mitchell Ben Arnold Clifford Wayman M H Miller J C Doughty H Sproute Harry L Bruce J B Gheen and C W Griswold join the list.
Ambassador Frost reports the sinking of the liner Almo by an explosion amidships near Queenstown Ireland. One American aboard the vessel was aboard the lifeboat and reported saved.
Chicago April 11. The Chicago Butter and Egg board abolished speculation in butter and eggs by a unanimous vote of directors. The board voided all rules for future delivery deals, allowing dealers to buy from shippers directly, effectively ending organized speculation.
Norfolk April 11 Captain Keprer of the Austrian Steamer Budapest says he wrecked the machinery on instructions but will not reveal the source. He was seized last Monday and refuses to name who gave the orders.
The House Ways and Means Committee unanimously reported the war finance bill for passage. It provides 5 billion dollars in bonds and 2 billion in treasury certificates to support wartime funding.
Postini cards from a sailor on an American battleship reveal censorship of naval mail. On the reverse side the messages state I am quite well and I am wounded and am getting well and hope to return to duty soon. The warning says any writing besides the address sender's name and date will destroy the card.
New York opens the baseball season as General Wood tosses out the first ball at the Polo Grounds. National league games include Pittsburgh at Chicago and St Louis at Cincinnati, with New York versus Boston postponed due to snow. American League games feature Chicago at St Louis and Cleveland at Detroit.
