An American steamer Seward torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean by a German U boat. Consul Gaulin at Marseilles reports the crew of thirty one believed safe. The vessel left New York March 3 bound for Genoa, 3390 tons, valued at about $300000.
Sheriff Harris and District Attorney Carville failed to reach Jarbidge as roads were impassable. Judge Taber ordered a postponement of the murder trial for three men and M. L. Weil’s forgery case to September 11, with witnesses and jurors excused until then. About forty jurors will be summoned for the Moore case set for April 16.
New York reports show unfavorable weather east of the Mississippi triggering a sharp advance in cotton for May delivery reaching 5.50 and July at 37.80. A telegram from County Commissioner Voight said he cannot leave the hospital for several days, delaying board actions that were postponed last Saturday and later addressed today.

London April 9 British forces attacked the German line along a wide front from south of Arras to south of Lens, opening what is believed to be a general spring offensive. General Haig reports penetration everywhere and progress toward Zambia and St Quentin, key positions in the new German line.
An American-born man in Gardnerville spoke treasonous remarks to a U S Army recruiting officer and narrowly avoided federal prison. The Gardnerville Courier urges loyalty to the government and flag, warning such attacks harm the nation and families.
A joint resolution to form a congressional joint committee on the conduct of the war was introduced in both chambers by Sen Weeks and Rep Madden. Weeks says it would connect legislative and executive branches and oversee future appropriations and expenditures. Also notes a volunteer aviation recruit, Russell Dorsey, heads to Reno for further medical exams before aviation school in San Diego. May 1 town of Eiko incorporation election set. comments on women voting and county game warden appointment delays due to absence.
Washington reports Austria demands passports and cuts diplomatic ties with the United States. Austria asks Sweden to take over its interests as war looms, while U S diplomats transfer affairs to Spain and Swiss ministers handle other interests. American prisoners in Russia and Austrian ships seized in several ports mark the fallout as tensions rise.
Washington April 9 The rank of brigadier general in the regular United States army is abolished by a provision of the army appropriation bill. After enactment all general officers would hold no less rank than major general. The film The Scarlet Oath starring Gail Cane opens at the Bradley tonight. World film production promises a thrilling Russian revolution tale.
High school students form a voluntary military athletics department to foster patriotism. The plan includes a company with sergeants and corporals, a seven to eight member Red Cross first aid squad, signal corps for Wigwag and flag signals, color sergeants buglers drummers, and a commissary division. Weekends are set for camping and trips to raise funds for equipment. Judge Taber and Morley Griswold volunteer for roles. Local Elko citizens offer support.
Frank Childress had a brief but exciting encounter with a rabid bull while driving near Mill Cavon last Wednesday. He fired five shots from a .45 into the bull, damaging the windshield as the animal attempted to climb over the radiator, ending the chase.
Berlin reports seventeen airplanes were brought down yesterday on the western front in an official announcement. The Entente suffered the air losses as the conflict continued with aerial engagements and ground actions shaping the front.
Washington April 9. A plan to introduce a five billion dollar bond issue in the house next Thursday was agreed by Secretary McAdoo and Representative Rainey. Three billion for an allies loan and two billion for war expenses in the United States. The two billion issue aims to cover about half of war costs to June 30 1918. Discussion of additional tax funding to support the war to come later. Efforts to rush the measure through the house will be addressed Wednesday. Some favor fifty year bonds with varying payoff times. Also $1 573 900 for a submarine base on the Panama Canal was submitted to the senate.
In Philadelphia eight and a half inches of snow fell today and New York recorded five and a half inches. Temperatures reached 25 degrees above zero, marking the coldest April 9th in Weather Bureau history.
A petition to the Carlin town board requests licensing of all boarders or lodgers. With County Commissioner Voight absent, the measure is laid over to the next meeting. Thomas Jack of Sutherland and McFarlane is summoned to Canada in July for military service, joining Lt. duties. Elko residents Dr. J. R. Eby and Prof. George Jensen also expect to be called to serve Uncle Sam.
New York April 0 The American liner St Louis safely navigated the German U boat blockade en route to and from Britain. She passed through the danger zone without sighting periscope and arrived at her home dock. The ship was well armed for the voyage, marking the first armed American passenger run through the waters near the British Isles since January 31.
The Overland Trail club reports a successful tag day with 225 new members and 532.50 added to the treasury. Ladies led the effort, and the full membership roll is listed, highlighting strong local support and the Elko branch’s growing strength along the route.
