Haig Holds As German Offensives Press British Lines

British lines east of Amiens were pressed back briefly to positions near Villers and Brettonneaux as Germans hurled large bodies at the Luce and Somme front. In heavy fighting with French and British troops, the advance was checked with heavy losses. The Haig center and right remained intact while the left withdrew near Hamel.

French Halt German Push East of Amiens in Bitter Fighting

Paris reports April 5 that German forces attacked through the night near Amiens but failed to break French lines. French regiments resisted and counter attacked, capturing Epinette wood and St Aleman farm while pushing back German advances from Arrerecour Wood. Mob Hangs Robert Prager in Collinsville Illinois

In Collinsville Illinois a coal miner named Robert Prager was hanged by a mob after a public demonstration. Prager who spoke at Marysville yesterday and urged in German for three minutes prayed in German before the mob dragged him from the city hall basement and hanged him from a tree one mile south of the city limits. Police initially sheltered him but the crowd demanded his delivery.
