Germany Offers Peace Talks Refused by Entente

Berlin reports Chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg told the Reichstag that peace talks were proposed on September 1 9 but the Allies declined. He warned the war must be fought to a finish, cited German winter crops as evidence of strength, and said Germany would not concede to Russian or Belgian terms or cede Polish territories.

Friends fear for Ralph Young after he vanished Saturday night leaving a note for his father saying he would go to Deeth to see his employer Wm. Vore. Young ran the Elko Soda and Bottling Works and was well respected. Vore traveled from Deeth to take charge of the business. Hope he returns safe soon.

Germans Claim Caillette Wood In Face Of French Attacks

Berlin says French assaults on Caillette Wood were repulsed and that German positions held. Fort Douaumont actions also repulsed. Artillery duels in the Argonne and Meuse continue. In March German losses include 14 aircraft. Allied losses total 44.

Torpedo Fragments Found in Sussex Sinking

London April 5 Ambassador Page via cable reports fragments of a torpedo embedded in the Sussex proving the ship was sunk by a German submarine. Fragments are being sent to the state department in Washington.

Fred Tyler Purchases Big Band of Sheep

A large flock of 8500 sheep was sold by Chas Mitchell and Dr A J Hood to Fred Tyler of Lovelock. The band and accompanying ranches and outfits move to Diamond A desert. Purchase price not disclosed. described as a major county transfer. Mr Tyler welcomed as a new county businessman.

London April 5 The English admiralty reports four unarmed merchantmen sunk without warning including the British steamer Benden the Spanish steamer Vigo the Norwegian Bell and the Dutch steamer Elzina Halera One Rendew sailor drowned over 27 saved Vigo crew adrift for a day and night rescued before a storm and landed at Gibraltar

Stranger tied to Caliente murder remains at large

Police say a man who left with a stranger the night of the crime is believed to be the killer. Sheriff Romow and District Attorney Orr pursued several clues without success. Beckman likely died about two weeks before the body was found in a severely decomposed state reported to Deputy Rex Mathews in Caliente.
