A lake shore wreck on Monday shows an engine's burden carried to destruction. Investigators probe the cause as debris scales the shore revealing the dramatic collapse and loss. Local authorities secure the scene and caution on potential dangers along the water.
The Lake Shore Limited departing Chicago at 9 pm wrecked in fog after a malicious switch was left open. Fireman A J Jerve died instantly and Engineer Lewis Reynolds was fatally injured. Tramp George Douglass and fireman W H Jerough perished. Detectives detained John Malski amid suspicions. Mrs Reynolds learned of her husband’s condition as remains of Jerue were en route to Chicago.
Reported wreck of the Lake Shore No 21 engine 544 near the city claims Engineer Reynolds and Fireman Addison J Jerne. Mrs Reynolds learns of the tragedy as son-in-law and son depart for Chicago. Reynolds later listed alive at Saint Luke's hospital.

The remains of Addison F. Jerne killed in Sunday night Chicago railway wreck arrived at 9 10 last night over the Lake Shore. They were taken to his Harrison and Tenth street home with the railway employes committee in charge. Hundreds gathered at the depot as the rough box was carried from car to ambulance.
Ephraim Sidner of Union township says he knows the person who removed burrs and a robe from his wagon Wednesday night and recalls a prior break in at his home a year ago when $36 was stolen after burglars forced entry by breaking a window with an axe.
No new diphtheria cases were reported to health officials in South Bend on Saturday. The families of Mrs Anna Platz of 130 Host Tuttle Street and Mr E Luther of 333 North Main Street were released from quarantine.
Charles Russell, linked to the Vanderlip diamond theft and suspected in the Richland bank robbery, was found by Kalamazoo Deputy Sheriff Clark in Lincoln Nebraska. He traveled under the alias C T Woods with Mrs Russell and will be sent to Kalamazoo. He previously testified against Slater and Allison in Michigan.

The silent steed of Col. M. V. Starr of Goshen, reported stolen, was found again. The would be thief rode the bike a block and then deserted it.
Ed H. Miller of Indianapolis pleaded guilty at Anderson to the charge of criminal libel, preferred by Miss Anna Luton, and threw himself on the court's mercy.
An organized gang steals bicycles in South Bend and ships them to Chicago where they are sold.
Three new diphtheria cases were reported in South Bend yesterday as schools reopened. L. H. Beyerle, former Goshen Times editor, ill at Clinton Tenn, suffered a relapse. Arthur B. Fox, a popular LaPorte youth, died suddenly Sunday. Main Street South Bend to be asphalted. Dr Kay’s Lung Balm advertised. Houseworth Bros. listed.
Cora Belle Thompson sues Thomas L. Thompson for divorce in a case filed by Chamberlain and Turner. They wed Oct 25 1888 and separated Oct 10 1900. Plaintiff seeks $500 alimony and custody of their 11 year old son Edward J.

The Lake Shore paid its second installment of taxes today, delivering County Treasurer Wood $10 932 80 in settlement.
Robt. L. McAuley was yesterday appointed executor of the will of John McAuley and his bond was fixed at $3,500.
Elkhart rural mail carrier W T Daly has resigned from his post leaving the route vacant.

A Mishawaka woman found the jug in her yard Saturday, apparently thrown by robbers who misjudged its contents. The pepsin was handed to local freight agents and sent to the consignee.
The Lake Shore fireman killed in Sunday’s Chicago wreck was taken to South Bend at 6:30 am and will be sent to Galien Michigan for interment. His wife, children, father and mother accompanied the body along with Undertaker M M Waley and a few friends. Galien is the deceased’s old home.
A letter sent to Joseph Flory at Waterford Mills years after his death was forwarded by the postmaster to his Milford son. It comes from a brother of Mrs Flory, last heard of in 1868, who seeks their whereabouts to plan a visit.
A prominent physician reports only a few serious illnesses in the city as cooler weather and heavy frosts purge the atmosphere of disease germs. Last night’s heavy frost followed by a 30 degree reading at five this morning was noted by an early riser.
Jacob Martin, a blacksmith on Elkhart prairie near Goshen, was pulled into a line shaft as his sleeve caught in the machinery. His hair was ripped out, leaving a bald patch the size of a man's hand, and his throat was blistered. His shirt tore away from his body, saving him from further harm.

Detroit's Board of Education approved a $1000 appropriation to buy a car for the superintendent to visit schools. Mayor Maybury vetoed the measure and suggested considering the expense of keeping a horse instead.
Mrs Edward R Niles of Goshen formerly of Elkhart becomes one of five heirs after the death of her father John Wayner of Evanston Illinois. The estate value is stated at $20,000.

Charles Knapp of LaPorte county is committed to an asylum after a period of brooding and despair. He returned from a prolonged absence to find his mother dead, and his wife and children believed her death. Knapp then suffered a mental collapse, becoming a raving homicidal maniac.
