J Huss Ralston arrived in Goshen from Chattanooga Tennessee for a several day visit with old friends. He was hospitalized at Erlanger after being shot and spent many weeks there. He is improved but not fully recovered and he dislikes Southern marksman.
A Chicago Record piece from Elkhart discusses Lake Shore freight service noting an Illinois farm egg laid Sunday is poached in New York and served on Wednesday for dinner, and that the shipment is not by mail or express.

In September a Washington DC widow died at Petoskey Michigan leaving a 35000 dollar estate. Her husband had died earlier. Her sole living relative is her estranged husband Mr Davis who now seeks to invalidate a will that left two thirds to strangers and one third to him. Davis and a Goshen attorney travel to Chicago to gather evidence to challenge the will and pursue law of descent.
Carl Yost 15 of Mishawaka died after attempting to ride a Lake Shore freight near Osceola. He fell while climbing to the top of the car and an oncoming train severed his leg. witnesses and Conductor A C Brown reported the accident. He was taken home but bled out from the shock.
Peter Stametz aged 73 formerly of Goshen died Friday night at his son in law Frank Lehman’s home in South Bend after Bright’s disease. He was a former engineer at Goshen’s Citizens Electric Light plant and had been badly injured in a prior machinery accident. His wife died in 1897. Funeral services were held at 2 30 Sunday afternoon with interment in Goshen today.
John H. Hendershott died at home 613 Thomas Street at 12 50 PM Sunday from typhoid fever. He was 51 years and 8 months old and survived by wife Artencia and three children Verna K Bertie E and Myrtle L. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM from the house with Rev. Brown officiating.
Miss Caroline Hummer died at 6 30 Sunday morning at the county farm from old age and its complications. She was 67 and had been ill since September first. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 30, interment at South West cemetery.
Coroner Hisenbeiss filed a report on Hugh Yoder's death from Wolcottville area. The verdict accuses his father, mother and Rev. Fletcher of criminal negligence and urges grand jury investigation. The report suggests they failed to recognize the boy's illness and caused his death.
Harry R Young who lost both legs in a Wabash train wreck in Fort Wayne was married to Edith Shultz of Huntington at his St Joe hospital bed Sunday. The bride stood by his cot as the ceremony was performed. the groom, barely able to speak, had planned the wedding for Wednesday and is not expected to live.
Andrew Haverstock of Goshen bought bologna for his wife and daughter who after eating found fur pieces. Tests identified the fur as dog hide and doctors confirmed dog meat. The Goshen board of health plans further investigation to halt sale of questionable meats.
State Geologist Blatchley reports Indiana oil fields expanding from Marion toward the Ohio line and toward the gas field. He notes oil beneath gas, deeper borings will yield oil after gas ends, with Broad Ripple showing oil and improved farmer contracts amid strong prices and a $18 million revenue over ten years.
R L Gordon brought in last Friday the largest eagle seen in years, a seven foot wingspan bald eagle weighing nine pounds. The rare national emblem, seized while Gordon tended traps, came down on the third shot. John Fickle purchased the bird for mounting.
Towns in this section press enforcement of the misdemeanor law banning profane language on public streets. The statute forbids swearing by anyone over ten years old and carries a penalty of one to three dollars per offense as communities seek stricter public decency.
LaPorte reports a developed diphtheria case imported from South Bend. The patient is Laura Krueger, 19, and authorities say steps will be taken to confine the disease within its present bounds.
In the estate papers of the late George Corlew a dated April 8 1858 fifty dollar note signed by John Roche was found. The note payable thirty days after date was never presented and later outlawed. The Roche heirs paid the face value when the administrator presented it, though 42 years of interest would have exceeded 150 dollars. The two men, both wealthy and methodical, evidently forgot the promissory paper.
The first section of Lake Shore freight train No. 62 left here before 3am when its air hose on car twenty five broke causing sudden braking and a split two miles out. Two cars left the track into a ditch, shaking crew. engine crew leader F J Napper halted the train and Conductor George Shobe called officials. Wrecking crew cleared by 7am with no injuries reported.
Sheriff of Eaton county arrested a pickpocket gang at the Charlotte fair. All but three suspects were released after investigation. The three remaining were held on $1,000 bail for Oct 26 trial. Bail forfeited when they failed to appear. believed wanted for other crimes.
Ben Weaver of Crawfordsville attempted to ignite a fire with a coal oil can on Saturday morning. The container exploded, clothing drenched in burning oil, and Weaver ran into the street where he rolled in agony before dying within minutes. It marks the third death from the same cause this month in Montgomery county.
George Clabaugh of the South Bend police describes Samuel Cooper as in worse condition after being shot by the notorious crook Lou Jaquith. Jaquith remains alive but in a hopeless state.
Britt G. Dressler representing Bryan and Charles W. Dunnington for McKinley wager on the presidential race in Indiana. The loser must buy 25 copies of the Chicago Daily News on Main Street as the payoff.
Mary A. Bowman was granted a divorce from Charles M. Bowman on grounds of drunkenness and failure to provide. She was awarded $300 alimony. Attorney for Mary Bowman was W. D. Dalton.
Standard Oil Co of Ohio transfers property in Goshen to Stand eo Oil Co of Indiana with Jonas O Hoover and C A Webymer named in the transaction. The consideration is listed as $65.

Word from St. Joe Michigan reports Charles Huggins formerly of Elkhart has been sentenced to two years in state prison for shooting and wounding a steward on a lake boat during a fight. He has been in jail since trial and showed distress at sentencing. He also faced prior trouble in Elkhart including a separate shooting during a quarrel with a negro.
Thieves broke into the Pere Marquette post office at Lakeside Michigan late Saturday night and stole about 75 dollars in stamps. Sheriff Ferguson of Saint Joseph pursued the case, with burglars first entering Sawyer car house, using a hand car to reach Lakeside, then fleeing after discarding the car in a sand bank.
Wilson H. Roose transfers a Goshen lot to Charles H. Crowell for 100 dollars. John H. Yoder sells a Wakarusa lot to Henry Holdeman for 400 dollars. John K. Matchett and partners sell 15 acres in Elkhart to John M. Cotterman for 1000 dollars. Marion H. Fabler and wife sell a lot in Elkhart to Jesse Sellers and Charles Bailey for 1000 dollars. Horace G. Aiden transfers 50 acres in Elkhart to Jacob G. Kindy for 1500 dollars.
The will of Abigail W Case dated October 15 1898 named Edna L Latta as residuary beneficiary after debts and funeral expenses. Isaac A Case is excluded since he already received a full share from Benjamin V Case estate. Mrs Case lived with and was cared for by her daughter Edna Latta.
A council committee with Lake Shore officials orders immediate paving on Tyler avenue and the nearby alley. Grade stakes set today and work will move quickly. Borne man and Doll will pay half the alley’s cost as their property adjoins. Company plans aim to remove hacks blocking the street.
Fish Lake Post Office will be discontinued with rural delivery from Goshen starting November 1. The route covers 48.25 miles over 62 square miles serving 1,575 people with 50 houses. Carriers are John McClenathan and Myron J Rhodes.
A bartender who bought a saloon months ago has the business closed on mortgage held by his wife. The bartender has since bought a grocery, leaving readers to judge whether the saloon man is ahead or behind.
The Indianapolis Sentinel reports the filing in the supreme court of the appeal by Melvin A. Demarest treasurer of the Elkhart school city against W. H. Holdeman and his bondsmen, appealed from this county.
Coroner Hisenbeiss yesterday filed a verdict in the death of Miss Mary Rupp at Dunlaps caused by a Lake Shore train. The ruling states the railroad was not responsible for the fatal incident.
About fifty neighbors and their teams gathered at the late John Blake's home six miles south of town for a husking bee. They husked the entire corn crop and stored it in the crib and tended the fredder. The family expressed sincere gratitude for the neighborly kindness.

Eugene Powell and De Corse Moore testified they knew nothing of the accident until reaching Mishawaka, and they remained on the eastbound train. The Sasects station agent offered no new details.
