He married Meda Zimmerman on June 6, 1898 near Goshen to escape paternity proceedings, then fled to Moline Illinois before returning for a visit. Mrs Jacob Mast of 316 Prairie street was thrown from a two seated carriage near Dunlaps Sunday morning and suffered a broken leg. The 3 year old child was unharmed. The tongue dropped from the neck yoke causing the horses to bolt and the carriage to upset. Mrs Mast was taken to a nearby residence, then to her home after a leg fracture was set.
