Mrs. Jose Wyatt of 116 State street is diagnosed with a mild smallpox case. A quarantine is in place with guards. two daughters Mrs. Thomas Walker and Maude Kinneman, and visitor restrictions for neighbors. Nearby Bricker family and others noted. physicians Kuhn and Hoppingarner documented photographs for local display.
Real estate filings include three mortgages and seven releases. Transfers list W. Fish to Michael Oberholtzer for a lot in Elkhart at 400 dollars, Willis Kehres to Joel and Mary Kehres for 90 acres in Osceola at 1 dollar, CG Huntinger to Julia A Hunt singer et al in Cleveland at 1 dollar, Elizabeth Bickel to Rufus and Mary B. Myers for a lot in Wakarusa at 640 dollars, Basher heirs to Carl O. Brandt for a lot in Elkhart at 1,300 dollars, Fred Shelly and wife to Skinner for land in Concord at 300 dollars, and E A Skinner to S H Milliken for land in Osolo and Concord at 300 dollars.
Leo Frash and Charles Fink paid their Sunday visit to Elkhart yesterday. The Goshen and Wakarusa boys seek the company of the Elkhart girls, who brave weather to spend Sunday evening there. Elkhart youths also look after the welfare of the girls.
Two Chicago youths Michael Laenowiecki and Theo Michalski both 22, drowned when their rowboat capsized near the West Michigan freight house river mouth. Spectators watched as rescue attempts failed. one body found in twenty minutes, the other after an hour. They had traveled to Derby, Michigan, to work as farmhands.
Frank Martin deputy auditor and secretary of the state board of tax commissioners issued a general call announcing the annual meeting of the board. The notice outlines date location and agenda items for discussion and approvals by members.
The board will hold three sessions starting July 29 August 13 and culminating August 22. The first session will hear appeals from assessments made by county boards of review. John Baumgardner of Goshen recently adjudged insane was taken to Longscliff asylum by Bailiff Gowing and D L Miller. At the street car station he attracted attention wearing jewelry. Before custody he loaned two bicycles. officers collected his belongings for the guardian once appointed.
The death of Mrs. Frances Stillman highlights that Mr. J. W. Fieldhouse provided her with a house rent free for many years. Grandma Stillman did not have a life lease but received a home through Fieldhouse’s generosity. Neighbors also showed great kindness.
Indiana state table shows 419 deaths among G A R members in 1900 the highest annual total since the war. Despite a shrinking veteran population the deaths exceed previous years as the rate climbs.
Miss Kate Merrifield of Mishawaka finishes 25th consecutive year as a public school teacher in South Bend. She did not miss a single day of reporting for duty during the term just ended.
Indiana apples exhibited at the Paris exposition earned the state a gold medal for overall tribute. The fall 1899 harvest supplied the fruit on display, with silver and bronze medals awarded to individual Indiana apple raisers.

A Lake Shore employee named Charles Hoffman met an instant death in an on site accident. Details remain scarce but authorities have begun investigations.
Charles Hoffman of 719 Garfield avenue was killed by engine 344 in the West End yards near the Tenth street crossing at about 6 10 am. He stepped onto the south west bound track and was struck and dragged fifteen feet before the engine stopped. Hoffman, born in Baden Germany February 15 1837, had worked eighteen years for the Lake Shore railroad and leaves a grieving wife. Coroner Hisenbeiss to hold an inquest. funeral set for Thursday at the Methodist Protestant church on Division street.
Two new smallpox cases appear in the city, including 40 year old William Hess a machinist living at 515 Lexington Avenue. Hess visited the Bricker residence where a quarantine was established and is now ill with eruptions. The Gorsuch family and two young daughters are under guard as authorities confirm the virulent outbreak and enforce isolation.
Mrs and Miss Conn plan to leave for Europe at 11 a m Wednesday. The Rev H B Townsend follows at 6 p m. Dr Miles and the Chicago contingent depart Thursday morning with a New York meeting Friday and sailing Saturday noon. They expect to stay in Glasgow Edinburgh Stratford London Paris Genoa Pisa Rome Naples Florence Venice Milan Lucerne Interlaken Schaffhausen Heidelberg Frankfurt Mainz Cologne Brussels Antwerp The Hague Amsterdam Rotterdam and more. The party will return mid September.
The Bristol circuit court convened in the heat for the murder trial of Harry Wisson. Defense attorney James S. Dodge opened, with Wisson present along with about a hundred residents. Deputy Prosecutor George Harper followed, displaying a skull indicating the fatal fracture. Three witnesses were examined, closing the morning session.
A large extra venire of fifty men exhausted yesterday as sheriff drove farmers in to serve as jurors. Persistent opinions and hot weather hindered juror selection amid possible siege fears. The jury was sworn and instructed before adjournment at five.

John C. Smeltzer died at his Wakarusa home yesterday aged 70. He leaves a wife and five children. Funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow.

Ernest Lloyd, 21, of Troy Ohio and Elkhart, drowned at Heaton Lake seven miles northeast of Elkhart. Witnesses described a sudden plunge from a boat after saying I am going, with body recovered within twenty minutes. Coroner and undertaker attended. Lloyd had heart trouble and had been on a lake outing with Paxson cottage party.

The funeral describes that he did not sink immediately but swam briefly before vanishing. Services were held at the undertaker’s this morning by Rev Parrett. The remains were shipped east at 11 20 to Troy Ohio for burial in the family plot near the city. Tomorrow morning short services will be held at the home four miles from Troy. Attending were Misses Jessie Leonard Pearl Ritter Mr and Mrs Burt Lloyd and Messrs Orville Puterbaugh and Amsey Lloyd who accompanied the body. The party will return Sunday.
Between 75 and 100 carpenters went to work yesterday at South Bend for contractors who signed the strike agreement. The union now numbers about 330 out. Several other contractors are said to be ready to sign this week. The strike’s labor loss is estimated at over $6,000 so far.

The circuit court will adjourn for the term next Saturday. Judge Ferrall takes a two month vacation as the court opens in LaGrange in September. Lawyers receive a three month recess until the next term begins in October. Many attorneys leave next week for vacations including the Pan American exposition and lake or mountain resorts.
Leroy Redden aged 27 of Bainter town and Bertha Ross aged 20 of Goshen were licensed to marry along with Alonzo Arbaugh 31 of Syracuse Nora Bartholomew 29 of Millersburg Jacob Beers 26 of Elkhart Hattie Martin 26 of Goshen Charles Martin 40 of Middlebury and Wilma Walter 26 of Middlebury all licensed to wed.
