Robbers entered P. P. Abbott's Goshen residence on Lincoln avenue yesterday while the family was away. A prior burglary occurred recently, with stolen cash, but authorities believe little was taken this time. Police have often warned off suspicious characters nearby and hope a band of robbers may soon be identified.
Judge Wilson announced appointments to the county charity board under a recent law. Named members include Mrs. Koweza Cooper of Aidilebury, Mrs. Mary Kheubettom of Wakerass, Mrs. Corrie Cock of Elkhart, John McNaughton of Elkhart, Mrs. MHanneh Welzer of Goshen, and E. D. Quinn of Goshen.
Two barns owned by Henry Gar brick and John Greenawalt in South West about six miles west of Goshen burned on Saturday night. Loss estimated around 2350 with some insurance coverage. The blaze started from an oil tank explosion between the barns.
A S Yoder sold the Baintertown water power and the old Rodebrush mill to William Ridden of Michigan. Indiana Electric Railway Co had been negotiating for the power, but the deal may now be blocked. Purchase price was £10 9.
Thomas Sebriene Tausen of Eikied and Ida Esile Giton of Ligonier were married by Justice Young in Go shen last evening and will reside in Elkhart.
Goshen News reports an anonymous letter writer in Napanee has targeted the town board and Perry A Early a prominent local lawyer. The letters, mailed or dropped on sidewalks, insult officials and threaten arrest if the offender is not identified by the post office.
Sheriff Elliott returns home from Plymouth after a horse theft case linked to a Warsaw theft two years earlier. The horse reappeared in a Plymouth livery stable in the same region and was found hitched to a buggy. The owner filed a rapleyin action and regained the horse, which had changed hands three times since the theft.
Charles L. Dinehart won a $154 judgment against the Union National Loan & Savings Association of Indianapolis in court room No 2 before Special Judge J. H. State and a jury. The defense moved for a new trial, which was overruled, and an appeal was noted. H. O. Dodge supported the plaintiff and R. M. McBride, former Supreme Court judge, represented the association.
John Whittle sought a divorce from Belle Whittle citing cruelty and abandonment. Belle countered with adultery and named Goshen women as co respondents. The circuit court granted Belle the divorce custody of their child and a dollar a week for support.
A farmer named Tavernier, two miles southwest of the city, fell from a wagon in front of the Hotel Bucklen Saturday evening. He was unconscious for about two hours after being thrown head first onto the brick pavement and sustained bad bruises to the head and shoulders.
Reverend U A Ogilvie of the First Congregational Church will marry Miss Dudley in Windsor Vermont next week. After a brief honeymoon in New Hampshire mountains the couple will return to Elkhart around September 1.
Robert B Braden aged said to be Elkharts oldest resident fell from the veranda at his granddaughter Mrs Ellis Ludlow 702 Harrison street yesterday afternoon He is feeble and the fall gave him a severe shock He is under doctor care and not yet able to leave bed
Mary A. Babcock through attorney E. H. Mammert applies for divorce from James B. Babcock of Nappanee alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. She requests restoration of her maiden name Mary Holderead.
Invitations issued by Mr and Mrs John Metzger of 1104 North Street announce the marriage of their daughter Mary A Metzger to Aaron Felthouse. The ceremony is set for 6 o clock evening at the bride’s parents residence. Plymouth death by own action reported for George Ackers, 45, unmarried, who drank Paris green after long despondency since his mother’s recent death.
Circuit court plans to adjourn likely by Wednesday or Thursday of next week. Judge Wilson will announce members of the county charity board tomorrow selecting three ladies and three gentlemen.
Herman Fedders, who underwent an operation for appendicitis at City Hospital Saturday, is reported in a fair way to recover. The operation was performed by Drs. Fleming and Hoopingarner.
Former Elkhart County treasurer William H Holdeman now in Michigan City prison is reported to receive liberty in the first week of July. The notice cites his nearing release and status as a former county official.
The Nappanee postmaster received a $100 salary raise, the third increase in three years, bringing annual pay to $1,400.
Edward Gesring a stone mason and town figure started a violent clash over new union wage scales in the city. He and Shea were involved. Gesring was jailed after pleading guilty to assault and battery and Shea received ten days. The piece notes the new military band director Mr Brown and Petoskey ties.
County expenditures allowed by the Board of County Commissioners from April 1 1895 to May 31 1809 include items for Bridge roads and highwares printing and advertising auditing and jail costs plus sums for county attorney janitor and superintendent jury light and fuel records stationery and circuit court truant officers and refunded tax. The grand total recorded is 823549 27.
A Strawtown youth, son of James Lytle, returned from Valparaiso with what doctors diagnosed as chicken pox, later claimed to be smallpox. If confirmed, the whole Hamilton County community may have been exposed, marking a second outbreak traced to Valparaiso students after a prior denial of smallpox there.
The old Van Alstine house on Mitchell street has been refitted and furnished and is in prime condition for summer guests. It is now the Elkhart, owned by Mr and Mrs Avery Brown. They will make guests happy and comfortable this season. Letters are coming in from Elkhart and elsewhere requesting accommodations.
A Shipshewana dispatch notes another smallpox case with high fever. Trains still stop at the depot for mails and passengers, while quarantine rules are enforced and business is nearly at a halt. Dr. Freeman from Valparaiso investigated and favors the view that the illness may be chickenpox.
The Hubbert Carriage and Harness company plans a four story warehouse addition of CS by 160 feet totaling 42 240 square feet in Riverside. The new structure will connect to the main factory on every floor via passageways as business expands. Albert Stamp of Harrison township near Goshen was badly hurt Friday evening when a limb broke from a cerple tree and he fell ten feet breaking his right arm.
A horse belonging to D. Schrock was injured yesterday afternoon on Main Street when a sudden step caused a nail in its hind foot to strike. Mrs. Schrock was driving and had struck the brick pavement before the horse balked. A pair of blacksmith pincers were used to remove the nail.
Mrs. Thomas J. Catherall of Mishawaka circulates posters seeking her husband who disappeared on March 9, 1899. The notice describes him as 45 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, slender, 150 pounds, with dark brown hair a small mustache and a very prominent nose.
The county board of review began operations yesterday morning in the basement room under the auditor’s office. The session will last 30 days and is expected to be busy. Members include County Assessor Maxon, Treasurer Wood, Auditor Foster, W. Elliott, and John McNaughton.
A La Porte resident died by hanging last night in a well kept house near the depot. He was a young man with a good reputation and is believed to have been temporarily deranged.
A dispatch from Michigan City says Dr Cole archdea con of the Episcopal diocese may succeed Dr Stockton as pastor of the Episcopal church of Goshen, the latter having accepted a call to the diocese of Burton Vermont.
Will J. Wilden of Goshen injured his foot with a pitch fork three weeks ago. Doctors fear blood poisoning but report his condition improved today.
Charles Himebsangh and Miss Alice Mann both of Goshen were secretly married and kept the announcement from friends until yesterday. They are young and well known in the community.
A Goshen soldier, just back from the service, reportedly lost $200 at a local county seat gambling joint and threatens to shut the place down. The incident highlights postwar tensions and concerns over vice in the county seat.
A marriage license has been issued to William C. Poyser and Sibyl Overleasa. The pairing receives official sanction to wed with the appropriate county clerk records.
John N. Hurty, secretary of the state board of health, returned from Corydon and Rockport where smallpox conditions were investigated. A fatal hemorrhagic smallpox case was found in Corydon. Rockport had twenty cases and one death. Corydon matched Rockport in case count. LaGrange quarantined Shipshewana. Valparaiso normal school students show eruptive disease.
Francis Peoples left a life estate to his widow Mary Peoples with the remainder to the children. Mary died in 1807, Hira sued for care costs and obtained judgment. Judge Wilson sustained the will, allowing the Peoples heirs to share equally in the estate, including Henry Peoples of Goshen.
Fire destroyed a small barn at 418 Sherman Street owned by J. P. Sanders and used by Delbert Hatch. Estimated loss about 50 pounds. The blaze, started by a nine year old, sent sparks to two nearby roofs, one on the same lot and another across the street, extinguished by hoses.
Miss Susan L. Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles L Miller will marry Roysi Garl this evening at their newly furnished home 225 Garfield Avenue Rev Zephiel of Watch Tower Evangelical church officiating Miss Miller a city schools teacher and Mr Garl an electrical contractor are well known in the city.
A barn dance hosted by Miss Mary Pratt in her new Pratt barn drew about thirty five young attendees last night. Notable outsiders included Miss Falget of South Bend Miss Hawks of Goshen and Rev M B Keeler of Los Angeles California. Refreshments followed by dancing and card games, guests praised Miss Pratt as a fine hostess.
An elderly resident, unnamed for safety, was arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of provoke and tried today in Judge Blake's court. She was found guilty and had sentence suspended. The case stemmed from a neighborhood quarrel among Mason Street residents, with the court convinced others shared guilt.
Mrs. W J Meader of 200 Division Street Elkhart received a telegram announcing the death of her father Henry K Abbott of Reading Michigan. Abbott was well known in Elkhart and had often stayed with the Meaders in recent years after months of illness.
Martha Dettweiler aged about 83 wife of John Dettweiler died Sunday afternoon about eleven miles south of town from dropsy and paralysis. Survived by husband five children Joe Susan Enos John and Anna. Funeral held yesterday morning at 10 oclock.
Dr. Freeman of Valparaiso who visited Shipshewana to study the small pox scare asserts the disease is an aggravated form of chicken pox. His remark angered some residents while the medical men reacted with concern.
Reports claim a former city councilman went to Christiana Lake for fishing yesterday. He became overheated and fell from a boat into shallow water but was rescued by nearby friends.
A North East Elkhart resident reports a group of boys causing disruption during Sunday church services. Police will investigate the complaint and address the misbehavior impacting worshippers.
Clergymen of the city with their wives and families held an Island Park picnic yesterday afternoon. Nearly fifty people attended. The afternoon fostered acquaintance with the new ministers and their families. A sumptuous picnic supper was served.
Street Commissioner Williams in charge of the Michigan street sewer reports repeated thefts of danger lanterns hung along the project. He believes he has located the thief and will pursue their return.

Parks officiating. Benton home quarantined due to exposure to smallpox from a girl from Valparaiso. Goshen considers opening a saloon in East Lincoln Avenue, bringing the town to nineteen saloons.
Frank Bickel of Goshen and Carrie Jacobs of Mishawaka united in marriage this morning at 8 o'clock. Both parties are well and favorably known here.
An Elkhart based 1:45 PM incident yesterday involved a truck and a cow owned by Jacob Cline about 245 miles west of Goshen. The animal sustained injuries likely to be fatal.
Edward Diltz a Hill's store clerk and Miss Gertrude Parks wed yesterday at 4 pm at the home of Rev J L Parks The couple will reside in Elkhart.
