The news includes Emma Grimes death, dam safety, and a bond remonstrance for Wakarusa school.
The jury in St. Joseph circuit court found for the Lake Shore rail way company in the Mary J. Lamport case for 825000. The decision will be appealed to the supreme court where it will influence a similar case involving Mrs. Boles against the same company.
Report describes a clash five miles from Ironton Ohio where miners attacked guards with stones, guards fired back and several may have died. A Chicago dispatch notes deputies moved on Bull Hill Colorado with a skirmish ongoing.
William E. Curtis reports Representative Conn of Elkhart Indiana bought the Washington Times from a struggling typographic union. Conn aims to publish a silver money proponent paper and run a lively Washington edition. He also operates a major brass and silver instrument factory on cooperative lines and has served as mayor.
Judge Baker sentenced Theodore Haughey the bank wrecker to six years imprisonment at Michigan City. Special to Truth. Indianapolis, Ind., June 7. The decision marks the conclusion of the bank raid case with the defendant receiving six years behind bars in Michigan City.
Theodor Haughey, an old fraternity man known across the state, is expected to reach the Indiana prison tonight. Warden French has relayed this guidance received from Indianapolis. The subject appears aged and worn after prolonged distress.
The Elkhart and Goshen area marked weddings in June with several ceremonies. Charles W. Klinefelter wed Misa Henrietta Markel at Willowdale M E church officiated by Rev W D Smith. A. H. Beardsley weds Maud Davenport at the bride’s home June 13. John M Monschein to Jessie L Wall to be married by month's end. Georgiana Butterfield married Charles McCutchen at the Hawks residence in a simple home ceremony officiated by Rev Charles T Stont.
Two hundred fifty Elkhart Republicans traveled to Warsaw to back Hon. James S. Dodge for the congressional nomination. Big Four officials supplied five coaches, martial music revived spirits, and about five hundred passengers rode trains. Elkhart delegates wore white badges reading Private Jim for Congress as they campaigned to rouse support.
The county board of health orders that no pupil may be admitted to any public or private school without proof of vaccination. A physician certificate or, if unavailable, evidence of successful vaccination will be accepted. Superintendents and teachers must collect proofs and report them to the health officer who will maintain records.
At Lakeside Park Warsaw a heated county slate vote produced Lemuel Royce as the Republican nominee over James S. Dodge. The convention drew about 1000 attendees as Elkhart and Kosciusko factions clashed and Royce secured the majority on multiple ballots.
W A Thomas brother of Dr W H Thomas of this city died at 7 o clock Tuesday morning at the family residence in Goshen after long ill health. Born March 3 1816 in Virginia, he came to Elkhart county in youth and lived there over sixty six years. He served in official roles including deputy clerk under his father Thomas Thomas the first clerk elected after county organization.
Florence Bemenderfer of Dunlap Indiana writes that her mother suffered grip in spring causing muscular rheumatism and that Hood s Sarsaparilla is doing her a great deal of good. Dated May 9 1894.
The article warns that large coal shipments must arrive within ten days or serious results will follow. The Lake Shore has canceled many trains, and without relief more will be abandoned. Famine impacts are felt, with on hand supply likely to run out before new coal arrives, forcing factory and business shutdowns and worker layoffs. After a strike ends it will take at least a week for newly mined coal to affect the market.
The republican nomination convention will be held on Thursday June 14 for five leading offices. For recorder there is only one candidate, Mr Immel of Millersburg. For clerk auditor treasurer and sheriff nominations are hotly contested with two candidates for clerk five for auditor three for treasurer.
