Poem by H. B. T. on Decoration Day praising flowers and song in memory of the dead who defended the union. It envisions children laying blossoms at graves and nature keeping vigil through summer, honoring blue-coated volunteers and unknown graves.
Memorial services were held yesterday at Trinity EB Church for ex soldiers and members of the W R C. Rev O H Brown delivered a specially prepared memorial address. About 130 veterans attended under their respective commanders Captain Chamberlain and Captain Bigelow. The Women’s Relief Corps members Mrs Shaw and Mrs Bigelow attended. Mrs Brown sang a solo and the church displayed elaborate flags bunting flowers and palms creating a bright scene.
The Frank Baldwin Circle with forty members attended a memorial sermon at Castle U B Church last evening. Rev. R P Burton preached on Hebrews 11 4 and spoke of war, duty, and humanitarian aims, praising the circle’s work feeding the hungry clothing the naked and visiting the sick.
Burglars entered the Charles Miller home in Goshen on Saturday night and stole diamonds valued at 600. The break in was discovered around midnight and authorities were notified.
George D. Benson of this city is in Elkhart to close a contract for managing the Fourth of July celebration. He left for Louisville and southern points to promote the same business. Benson is noted as a master of such work and also plans street fairs, bringing his skilled control to these events. Elkhart people are fortunate to secure his services.
Will soon report. Expert W. EB. Myler told commissioners his review of ex-Treasurer BK. A. Campbell accounts should be ready in about a week. No result hinted. prior officer audits showed errors on both sides as in earlier cases. Shipment of Red Cross wagons to War Department. Nine Studebaker ambulance wagons, marked U S and Red Cross, moved through the city en route to Washington.
A. B. Hamilton, almost 101, died at his son P. A. Hamilton's home on Jefferson Street after a long life that began in 1797 in Pawtucket New Jersey. He served as a cadet captain in the War of 1812 and survived to be remembered for memory of early events and youthful exploits. Four sons survive him and funeral services will be held at the house with Rev. C. H. Brown officiating. remains to be shipped to Tecumseh Michigan.
The Indiana Electric Railway company acquired all stock of the Elkhart Goshen and Southern company including franchises right of way a power house site and on hand material. The deal grants a thirty foot right of way across farms between Elkhart and Goshen plus three marketable west side lots and rails sufficient for about a mile of track. The franchise carries no material value but moves with the sale.
Elkhart and Laporte colonies in Chicago plan their fourth annual reunion. Local members gather to reconnect with former residents and share colony updates during the event.
On Decoration Day a pair of burglaries occurred while police joined a parade. John McNaughton’s No 40S Second Street house was entered with $1,000 in estimates of loss including diamond jewelry opera glasses and a revolver. W A Sterling’s corner home also fell to theft with a revolver a watch and smaller items missing.
James Lloyd of Golden and Lloyd and Miss Ida Stair were married at 8 o'clock Saturday evening at the English Lutheran parsonage by Rev. C. K. Rice. The bride lives with her parents five miles southwest of the city. The couple will reside above the new Golden and Lloyd store at the corner of Sixth and Harrison streets.
The Volunteers will meet this evening for drill and to accept new members. Col. Hubbell believes a third call will be issued soon and his regiment would be among the first selected if not used on the second call. He has no information about a Chicago paper’s claim of the regiment filling a southern state quota.
Frank Suall, a Muncoie bicycle dealer and fast rider, wed Miss Abbie West in the Presbyterian Church parsonage. The couple mounted bicycles and balanced each other by holding hands as they were united while astride the steel machines.
Goshen attorney H. A. Stauffer of the firm Stauffer and Maior is named as a Democratic candidate for state representative. He is a well known figure in the area.
Hint About Peach Trees warns to watch trees for borers and dig them out to save the trees. Gum exudation signals borers at work, and they attack the bark near the ground.
A Chickamauga correspondent notes the army mule provides sport around camp. The animal often breaks loose from its hitching place or bucks its rider, dashing through camp to prompt a crowd and laughter.
The U S Supreme Court overturned state court rulings upholding oleomargarine sale restrictions. The decision declares such laws unconstitutional and an improper interference with interstate trade, signaling a flood of oleo margarine and potential hurt for butter producers.
Decoration Day observances featured parades at Grace Lawn cemetery and Studebaker Park. Mayor H B Sykes, Capt O T Chamberlain, Col R M Johnson, M M Boothman spoke and a flag gifted by Mrs A R Beardsley was raised as the Woodmen of the World and other groups honored fallen heroes.
The Fourth of July general committee met at the W O W hall to discuss music, programs, and funding. Plans include Trumpet Notes Band providing up to 24 players for 75 dollars and K O T M Band at 35 dollars for 16 pieces, with Nusbaum offering free programing and distribution.
A Saturday evening benefit performance for Company I members at Bucklen Opera House is expected to be an artistic and financial success. Assisted by Trum pet Notes Band, Ladies Glee Club, Apollo Orchestra, Conn Quartet, Arion Quartet, city church choirs, a 200 voice chorus, Opera House Orchestra of thirty men, and Messrs. Carl Barney, Joseph Schreiber, George Shaw, D. J. Ford.
The wheat market moved lower with June wheat opening at 1.10 and closing at 1.08. July prices opened at 98.14 cents and closed at 91.34. September opened at 82.14 cents and finished at 78.14.
The weekly crop bulletin reports farm work as steady progress in northern Indiana with corn nearly all planted and coming up well. Wheat is heading, oats and early potatoes thriving, while late potatoes are being planted. Some fields damaged by heavy rains have been replanted and gardens, grasses, and fruit trees show good prospects.
The Rogers Goshen band performed a double number featuring Sousa Bride Elect and Cuban Independence marches arranged by Louis B. Noble and dedicated to Prof. Chas. E. Rogers. Applause favored the second tune over Songa's selection signaling its popularity. Frederick W. Miller seeks leave to sell and liquidate estate indebtedness in Elkhart partition suit. Addie Adams is granted a divorce from Arthur Adams in this city.
A rumor spread that Sherman Rossiter of Company E 157th Regiment had died of typhoid fever, prompting telegram notices to his parents. A check at his home showed the tale false, with a letter confirming he remained in good health as his family planned to visit Ft. Thomas before deployment.
George Burhans and family of Osceola visit the Ernsberger family this week. Several residents travel to nearby cities, including Mrs. Milburn to Grand Rapids and Miss Ella Middleton learning of her sister Katie Barnes’s death in Three Oaks. Local and regional visitors and movements observed through the week.
