Origin of Memorial Day and early observances
In 1862 on May 30 Mrs. Sarah Nichols of Dubuque Iowa and the wives and daughters of Chaplain May laid flowers on Arlington graves. The following year the same service occurred again and spread. Fredericksburg women continued the practice from 1863, and May 30 was observed annually until Congress recognized it as a national holiday in 1874.

The twelve year old son of George Yates of 511 Indiana avenue received a painful puncture wound in the left leg yesterday afternoon while attempting to climb a fence. A sharp nail pierced the flesh about an inch, creating a circular wound. Dr Shoyst attended and dressed the injury carefully to prevent lockjaw.
