In New York on July 28 a riot near the Williamsburg American Sugar Refining plant left one man dead and many injured as 5,000 striking workers faced police and guards. H A Morgan, cashier of the refinery, was arrested for the fatal shooting amid chaotic protests and missiles from upper floors. A priest pleaded for calm as reserves dispersed the mob.
Columbus mobilizes state and National Guard units from Cleveland Cincinnati Findlay Bowling Green Kenton and others to operate street cars amid strike fear. Two special trains bring fifty guardsmen from Cleveland and four companies from Springfield Daytona and Xenia with more units en route. Columbus sees no riots as guards guard arsenal and cars remain idle until 2000 troops arrive.
The will of Norris E H Felt is filed in the superior court naming widow Jennie Felt as executrix. The estate, real and personal, is to be enjoyed by the widow during her life with no sale unless necessary for her benefit. Upon her death, the will directs the property pass to their daughter and son.
In Warsaw Indiana a Pennsylvania train struck an automobile as it attempted to cross tracks. Mr and Mrs Frank Brooks and Mrs Edward Thor ing of Lima Ohio were killed.
A 13 year old, Freeman Strang of 528 Middlebury Street, fell when his trousers snagged by a bicycle chain on West Lexington Avenue. He revived with mainly a wrenched shoulder and bruises. Other incidents include a 12 year old falling through a barn floor near Elkhart and two Lake Shore workers sustaining throat, chin, and chest injuries from handling equipment.
County auditor estimates show Elkhart city taxable value at 6 878 390 dollars up 105 865 from 1909. County total taxable value hits 24 219 535 dollars excluding railroads and similar corporations. Concord township outside the city gains 47 965. Osolo and Osolo in the city rise as well.
The body of O. F. Stevens, traveling salesman, was taken to Detroit by his son H. W. Stevens after being found dead in a local depot hotel room. Coroner says death due to apoplexy, with the elder Stevens recently in poor health and often staying in his chair for heart ailment.
Italian attorney Constantino V. Riccardi of Indianapolis and interpreter Dr. A Montani arrived in Kendallville and secured bail reduction from 500 to 400 for Joseph Tlaoti, a prisoner in the State vs Spinato murder case. Riccardi says he defends all three Italians and others will be released soon.
Lake Shore trainmen report three regiments of the Ohio National Guard were ordered to active service at 12:30 AM. Lieut Powell of the Sixth regiment, a brake man, arrived in Elkhart from Toledo on No 37 and learned of the call after drill. The First, Third and Sixth regiments were summoned, with the Sixth based in Toledo.
Socialists plan an ovation for Prof. George R. Kirkpatrick of New York arriving to debate Dr. William B. Guthrie on socialism versus capitalism. Both speakers expect to ride the same Lake Shore train, while the management anticipates partiality and aims to keep Guthrie respected. The program opens tomorrow after a Northern Indiana Good Roads meeting, with Mrs. Carrie Nation delivering a temperance address expected to draw large crowds.
Rioting and arson on the Grand Trunk Buffalo Division lead to order for eight companies of state troops and artillery at Durand Michigan. Train service resumes under Brigadier General McKee instructions as violence declines in South Bend and Buffalo areas.
Two youngsters accused of shooting at birds along South Main street with air rifles were taken to the police station and given a stern lecture on the dangers of such acts. After a cautionary talk they were released.
The Society of Automobile Engineers begins a three day summer session in Detroit Michigan with a large attendance and noted authorities scheduled to read papers. The annual dinner will be held this evening.
Fred Helser, formerly with Black Crown Motor, and his father Jesse Helser of Warsaw form Helser Sheet Metal Specialty. The firm at 123 North Main opens to produce all metal auto parts including fenders tanks and other sheet metal work.
Engineers Sam Cawley and Billy Sherwood smashed the Michigan division record by hauling the Twentieth Century Limited 134 miles in 102 minutes from Toledo to Elkhart. The run included fast splits to Kendallville and Elkhart with a brief delay due to an engine issue. Another crew, Mark Floyd and D A Fleming, also set a Western division record at 101 miles in 88 minutes.
E. C. Ziesel, president of Home Telephone, could not understand City Attorney Proctor's ruling on the new franchise. He will seek a meeting with Proctor for a clearer view and will comment only after the city council acts on the franchise ordinance and the changes urged by the attorney. He indicated Home would respond to any provisions once the council has acted.
Madrid reports that diplomatic relations between Spain and the Vatican were severed after the government announced that displays of non Catholic insignia will be allowed in street processions.
Oyster Bay July 28 Special report states Annie Homestead, aged years, was struck and instantly killed by a speeding automobile driven by M. Doubleday while he was en route to Sagamore Hill to meet with Gokee Roosevelt.
A reward of $200 is offered for information leading to the arrest and recovery of Mullin steel stolen by four individuals last Saturday night near Adamsville. The incident has prompted police to seek witnesses and evidence.
Word has been received of the death of Henry Cole of Guthrie Oklahoma. A native of Ohio he enlisted in Company C Twelfth Indiana Cavalry December 12 1863 serving through the war. He formerly commanded Hartranft Post G AR. Mrs Cole is a Puterbaugh and Mr John a Wattwell all of this city.
Automobilists urged to assist in entertaining visitors at the Northern Indiana Good Roads association gathering in Elkhart. The two-session program includes a morning directors’ session and a public afternoon meeting at Moe Naughton park with speeches on good roads. An executive committee may be appointed and the by laws adopted. Carl G. Fisher reportedly will donate $10,000 worth of materials for road improvements between South Bend and Plymouth. The event coincides with the St. Joseph Valley Chau tauqua opening in the park until evening.
F A Bryan, general manager of the Indiana Michigan Electric Co., stated no new activity along the St Joseph river east of Elkhart is intended beyond ratifying an old survey's records. The survey party's presence drew curiosity, but rumors were dismissed as unfounded.
