Clarence H. Hussey of 122 High Street nearly drowned while swimming at the Two Oaks pool near the Big Four bridge in the Elkhart river. Sat night he sank three times. friends pulled him out, revived him after lengthy effort, and he regained consciousness and resumed work the next day.
C S Welty of Hilk hart Electric learned this morning his brother died in a Knox county coal mine. He left with his sister from the Columbia hotel to collect the body for burial in Wakarusa. The deceased was about 18 or 19 and had been away from home for years.
Elkhart County’s total assessment increases by 766,478 over four years. Four years ago the total was 19,487,063 and this year it stands at 20,253,535, reflecting growth in taxable values and property base.
The funeral for the late Mrs. Hively will be held at 3 p m Friday at the Presbyterian church. Viewing of the remains is open from 9 to 2 Friday.
Miss Gusta Bedenkop, age 31, is believed to be dying at her brother’s home on South Second Street. She is described as suffering from consumption.
Officers and committees were appointed at last night’s Pennsyl vania picnic meeting. President F. E. Hughes secretary S. G. Mathias treasurer Frank J. Goldman listed. Committees include music doctors and professors, speaking leaders, printing and arrangements, apple butter, and finance. Sub-finance and membership groups will be formed countywide.

In Rome on July 15 rumors spread of the pope in a death stupor but the morning reported he is still alive. The bulletin notes the heart and one lung function intermittently and little mental activity, with no clear time for his final dissolution. Many expect the end tomorrow on Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast day.
Rome reports at 9 o'clock: the pope slept at intervals with stable condition. Pulse 82, respiration 30, temperature 36.2 C. Trib une special edition states indications favor possible survival through tomorrow and perhaps with difficulty until Friday.
Washington July 15 Cardinal Rampolla wired the papal allegation that the Holy Father passed a fairly tranquil night and his condition remains unchanged.
Mrs. James G. Blaine died this morning in Augusta Maine after a long illness and general breakdown. She was nearly 75 years old.
Oyster Bay July 15 The president weighs the poste office scandal as attorney Bonapart of Baltimore, chief prosecutor against crooked contract men, visits Sagamore Hill. Secretary Shaw Ray Stannard Baker and H H Kohlsaat of Chicago join for luncheon.
William Thacker a 57 year old prison inmate awaiting a third arraignment after a new trial was granted was seized by a mob at midnight. The crowd got the jail keys and dragged him to a tree on the town edge where he was killed by stones after a brief struggle.
A horse owned by Simon Van Patten bolted from Paxon's store on South Main street near 1 pm and struck David Garl, six miles north of the city, as he stood with his wife and child by a rig on High street. Garl suffered a violent fall with the baby spared from injuries apart from a mouth cut. Mrs. Garl was unhurt.
In Benton township Ol lie Pence, 20, is critically wounded when Asman Young, 16, son of trustee George Young, accidentally shoots him during a Fourth of July celebration. Pence is under care of four doctors, two from Goshen, as the incident unfolds with uncertain prognosis.
Lily and Sons relocate across West Franklin Street into larger premises after four years of growth in the area. The firm, formerly based in Canada, has built a strong local reputation and broad patronage, with friends sending best wishes for the new location.
Prospect Lodge No. 162 of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen completed refurnishing and repapering their hall in Crall building making it one of the finest lodge halls in the city. The red papered walls and large bordered carpet, supervised by James Lynett John B. Hafer C H Dellinger A Nelson Probst and A J Hubbell, accompany a 200 plus active membership and an invitation to other lodges to inspect and compare.
A woman in the city sent James Kurtz to check reports that her adopted child near Mottville Michigan was ill treated by foster parents. Kurtz found no truth to the rumor after a thorough investigation conducted in Michigan.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 4 o clock for Mr. F. B. Pratt, longtime retiree, who suffered a paralysis illness for many years. The notice indicates a business-era retirement about ten years ago.
A list of transfers shows Minnie P and Jessie B Miller selling a Millersburg lot to Eliza Fegg for 213.46 dollars, multiple Elkhart properties changing hands from Beebe to Poyser and others, and various parcels in Goshen and Elkhart transferring to trustees or new owners with prices ranging from 1 to 2,800 dollars.
Elkhart men argued over renting Benham’s Klinger's Lake cottage for the summer. C. H. Wright paid 800 dollars after a heated dispute with L. R. Boyle who claimed he had leased the same cottage. Wright finally bought the place for 300 dollars from Benham. Both men remain at Klinger's Lake as friends hope for peace.
Rome reports Pope Leo Xl died this afternoon at 3:55 following a peaceful decline. Priests gathered nearby to pray for the soul as doctors confirmed the death with standard tests. Cardinal Rampolla notified the pope’s officials, leading to the removal of the fisherman's ring.
Tonitis led to urgent care and an operation seen as the only hope of recovery. She was 21 years 2 months old and leaves behind parents two brothers Manuel and Edgar of Mishawaka and four sisters Mrs Charles Smith of Palestine Texas Mrs Charles Ve cer of South Bend Mrs Bo McCarty of this city and Mrs John Mineger of Mishawaka. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 PM at Castle U B church with Rev Parrett and Rev Heuston officiating. Burial will be at Grace Lawn cemetery.
Isaac Frain aged 70 of Five Points Michigan formerly of Elkhart died last night after a cow dragged him a short distance, the rope breaking at the wrist. The incident fractured his skull and exposed brain tissue. he left a wife and a grown daughter Mrs James Hatfield. Funeral Thursday from the Lutheran church at Five Points. Body prepared by Stephen & Sons of Elkhart.
The picnic committee has secured ex-Congressman Frank J. Hanley of Lafayette to deliver the address on August 15. Hanley is recognized as a forcible and eloquent speaker.
