A Chicago woman beat an Elkhart man at Lake Shore depot after arriving on No 20. She struck him with a monkey wrench after a confrontation over a husband’s arrival. He suffered a bloody nose, two black eyes, and loss of gumption while witnesses jeered. The assailant fled. the man left town on vacation.
Supt Silvers encountered Fred Fuller of Jackson Mich a half drunk man asking for food and drink. Silvers lured him toward police HQ joking he had a good place for him Fuller agreed and pleaded guilty to public intoxication receiving a fine and jail time.
George Kronewitter of St Joseph County sues to recover 51 acre farm alleging a swindle over a mortgage and a trust sale. He says his wife deeded her half interest to him to secure a threshing outfit loan of 2225 dollars and unnamed party in trust would sell at a set minimum. he contends the deed was fraudulently filled and he lost the property and the threshing price. Defendants include Huber Mfg Co of Indianapolis and company agent Henry A Davis.
A horse owned by Mrs. John Heaton five miles east of the city escaped its buggy yesterday afternoon near Main and Division streets. The horse was captured with help from a Humane Officer Miller who assisted the woman in repairing the harness after the incident.
Fragmentary OCR notes suggest names Everett and Fred linked to a jealousy related matter. Details are unclear, with phrases like Not the Cause and Ret appear.
Fay Arms nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Emory Arms of Liberty Street is reported as the communitys second lockjaw victim this summer. He stepped on a rusty nail while playing about a week ago and after home remedies the foot healed briefly. A tight shoe irritated the wound causing lockjaw to develop yesterday morning and the boy has suffered severe pain since. The attending physician has given up hope for recovery.
Indianapolis July 18 United Press News Assn reports the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners may raise assessments for traction companies this year. Board members note past pleas of infancy and current depreciation factors while hearings continue and a conservative increase is anticipated for most roads.
Abram Upp born April 15 1827 in Pennsylvania moved to Butler County Ohio as a youth. He learned milling and spent years in the trade before coming to Elkhart in 1873 to build a paper mill, later entering straw board tissue paper and other ventures. He was a major stockholder in the Elkhart National Bank which later closed. he leaves children and ten grandchildren.
The Goshen city case in the Indiana Railway Co matter shows sheriff service on Myers, Goshen agent, after officers failed to locate any stockholders. The same method was used in prior state cases against the railway last winter, with Judge Dodee ruling for the corporation.

A sheriff responded to a reported Romani group blocking a road two miles out. The band pitched a road camp and some people, including women, were said to be encamped and telling fortunes, causing traffic disruption.
Suspected con men in Allegan Michigan operate under the alias O E Smith posing as a farmer. They forged a farmer’s name to induce settlements, sent forged checks, and used aliases like B B Byron in Salt Lake City. Authorities offer a 50 dollar reward for the arrest of the clever sharker involved.
Abram Upp, elderly settler and property owner, died at his home 219 Division Street after more than three years of illness. He was 78, born in Pennsylvania on April 15, 1827, and had lived here about 32 years. Survived by four daughters and one son, the funeral is set for 4 PM tomorrow at his house with Rev. Simpson presiding.
Goshen News-Times reports Elkhart Home Telephone officials led by Manager M. E. B. Crow visited Goshen to consult with W. L. Shoots on installing a new visual signal switch board with 2 000 phone capacity. Installation planned soon after August 1, improving local service. Home Telephone aims to serve most phones in Elkhart county with courteous treatment.
The Indianapolis Sentinel notes the last major case in the old court room at Indianapolis, the Elkhart bank wreckers trial. Defendants Brodrick Collins and Brown were committed for terms of years in the federal prison at Fort Leavenworth.
A large Elkhart gathering filled six cars for an evening event at Springbrook Park. E A Coutourier led the Trumpet Notes band, a Gilmore outfit, during the concert drawing hundreds.
The best piano and vocal soloists of the city have been secured to take part in the entertainment at Biv e Baptist church Tuesday evening at 8 o clock. The shop chorus will also sing.
Mrs Ida Stockford aged woman at 110 1-2 South Main street prepared for death by attaching a gas tube to a chandelier in her front room. She left notes blaming Warfield Newman and hoping divine punishment. Viola Melcher, a friend, testified Stockford had long shown threats to kill herself after disputes with Newman who had taken her revolver and money.
Mrs. Stockford, 85, daughter of Mrs. Sophia Hoot of Toledo, died at home after nervous trouble treatment by Dr. Hauenstein. Notes accuse Warfield Newman. Stockford had two late spouses, Harry Sherman and Will Stockford. Neighbors sympathize as Mrs. Newman bears an unfortunate position amid the tragedy.
Mrs. Margeret Hostetter died suddenly at 309 North Main Street yesterday after a week long illness. She planned burial at Ligonier with services at 10 30 AM and 11 30 AM in Ligonier. She leaves two brothers Harry and D Hostetter and daughter Mrs Alice Sandrock of Atlanta. Neighbors may view the remains this afternoon and tomorrow morning between 8 and 10.
Reports from many sections indicate that black rot in grapes will be quite general this season. It is the most destructive fungus enemy of the grape, and while this year’s crop may be beyond saving, methods exist to lessen the damage for next year’s harvest.
The funeral for Mrs. Ida Sicherman Stockford, who died by self harm Sunday afternoon, was held at 10 o clock this morning at 7321 2 South Main Street home of Charles Wisenheiss. Rev. L Fisher led services. Burial followed at Rowe Cemetery.
Seven year old son of Mr and Mrs N E Jones of South Bend drowned yesterday afternoon after falling into a cistern at 4 o clock. Funeral is set for 6 o clock Wednesday. Mr Jones is an undertaker in South Bend.
The Goshen city council refused to grant steam as motive power to the Huntington Columbia City Northwestern Railway Co. and the company withdrew its franchise application. It was announced that if the road goes to Goshen it will use a private right of way.
Army worms have swept 500 acres of timothy oats and barley near the southwest corner of St Joseph county and are still advancing. Farmers plow deep furrows to try to stop the ravagers.
Frank Flynn of the Elkhart Gas Co denies being the Flynn who wrote a letter to a Goshen paper defending the Truth from an affront. He asserts his correct name and distance from the claimed defences in the public dispute.
