Two Night Fires See Local Fire Department Save Homes
Two fires on Saturday night tested the small fire department. At 8 pm John Waeder’s 204 Middlebury Street fire started in a top floor clothes closet likely from matches striking by rodents. extinguished with water. Loss not less than 50 dollars, no insurance. The second blaze at 1220 South Main Street began in the Manchester home kitchen where stored goods and dishes burned, but the kitchen fire was contained after heavy damage totaling over 100 dollars to the house and at least 500 dollars to Mrs. Manchester’s goods, with no insurance on the home. The origin remains a mystery as packing straw and barrels caught fire.
