Coal Shortage Hits Mishawaka with Steep Prices

In Mishawaka the coal supply is critical as no synthracite or coke is available and soft coal is scarce and unsatisfactory. Families rush to burn whatever they can and some retire after supper to save fuel. Jackson Hill coal sells for seven dollars a ton and prices may rise if hard coal becomes available. No quotes are given due to the absence of hard coal to sell.

Blizzard Rages Across Northern Indiana With Terrible Suffering

A Peru telegram reports the fiercest blizzard in years sweeping northern Indiana with the temperature plunging to 11 below and expected to reach 20 below. Eleven inches of snow on the level and drifts up to seven feet strand trains and stall factories as fuel shortages rise and prices soar. Louis Greenwald is found on a railroad track frozen with a broken leg after slipping. Chicago date Jan 12.

Bristol Fire Turmoil Corrected After Rumor of Destruction

A Bristol Ind fire did not destroy the town as rumors claimed. A two story brick block housed Ed Finehout’s drug store and Charles Long’s barber shop with lodge rooms above. Losses totaled about 6 000 dollars with insurance gaps and impact on Odd Fellows and others.

A Bristol fire last night severely injured the son of J. T. Broughman who lives on Middlebury street. Dr. Randolph treated him for a dislocated right ankle chest injuries and frozen ears.

Elkhart Men Helped Fight Bristol Fire

Alec Dotson Frank Leader and Elza Darling answered Bristol fire call about 1 o clock. They secured two horses and a cutter and reached the town in 55 minutes. Each man got a Babcock fire extinguisher and battled the flames. Bristol residents praised the Elkhart boys saying the town might have burned without them. They returned to the city between 8 and 9 this morning.

Fire destroys rooming house. woman dies leaping from window

A morning blaze at 2314 Pine street in St Louis killed Helen Brown age forty by jumping from the second floor window. Her daughter Eugenia and Jennie Thompson also leaped and sustained probably fatal injuries. All three are described as colored.

Indianapolis Electric Traction Looms for Indiana Ohio Links

Major S. W. Collins promotes the South Bend Elkhart Winona and Warsaw electric line to connect Elkhart with Warsaw Napanee and from there to Wabash Marion and Anderson to Indianapolis. The plan envisions hourly fast service to Indianapolis in about five hours with new lines extending toward Cincinnati via Union City and Greenfield. The county board will consider the Turkey Creek ditch project on February 3.
