Early settler David Simonton dies at 84 in Elkhart
David Simonton, among northern Indiana's first settlers, died at 5:30 PM yesterday at his son's home in Elkhart after an apoplectic stroke. Born December 16, 1817 near Springfield Ohio, he arrived in Indiana in 1832 and built a local fortune through farming and carpentry. He moved to Elkhart in 1856, leaving a widow and son L R Simonton, plus four grandchildren. Funeral is 2 PM tomorrow at his residence with interment at Grace Lawn Cemetery. he was a leading landowner and notable figure in the area.
