Bloomington report says detectives doubt James McDonald's guilt in the Schafer murder mystery. Another arrest is anticipated as investigators press the case from Bedford Indiana on February 20.
Bloomington Ind Feb 20 James McDonald accused murderer of Sarah Schafer was visited last night and in a half hour conversation appeared to feign religious conversion or become a raving maniac He claimed the Lord spoke to him while praying on his knees and said he did not need a lawyer and was willing to go to Bedford for trial.
Harley H. Holderman once employed by coal dealer H. W. Godfrey left town after stealing and selling coal to neighbors. Godfrey pursued prosecution, later settling with Holderman for 100 dollars funded by J. S. Hays of Nappanee, father of the implicated youth.
Lydia L Probst wife of engineer A N Probst of Elkhart Ind died Feb 17 at her parents home in Union Mich. Funeral at Baptist church attended by many from Elkhart Cassopolis Williamsville and Grand Rapids. Born Oct 15 1865 in Union she taught school before marriage in 1895. The family moved to Cassopolis then Elkhart where her husband works on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad. She died of consumption after years of illness and treatment in Denver and other places leaving a devoted husband and two children.
An eastbound train collided with a freight near Hobart Indiana in the early morning. Charles Strayer baggage master was killed. Mail clerks Bowers and Thomas and several passengers including C Weisenberg C F Haverin A Linder and the fireman were seriously injured.
Justice Sanders reports Mr. Bulla a popular Lake Shore road conductor and Mrs. Bulla a pretty Elkhart girl. The young couple will shortly begin housekeeping at 712 Marion Street.
Francis M. Cripe sues to quiet title and cancel a mortgage on Elkheart County property. He states a $319.50 final payment sent to Hirshfield via Indiana National Bank was delayed and cashed by Monroe County Bank at Dundee Michigan after the Indiana bank failed, Hirshfield claiming nonpayment due to agent error. Harman and Zigler represent Cripe.
H. C. Dodge states he is not an applicant for the circuit judgeship. He warns that a nominee would risk losing clients by leaving practice. Dodge, preparing to retire, says he would accept the post only if it aids his retirement.
Mrs. James S. Drake, wife of a well known lawyer, died at noon today following a two day illness with pneumonia and neuralgia of the heart. Goshen faces a coal famine with no hard coal and little soft coal, risking factory closures.
Warren G. Sayre, the Wabash candidate for the gubernatorial nomination, was in Goshen today to campaign and meet voters. Local supporters highlighted his platform and plans for the state.
James D Pearce aged 70 years died at Goshen today from paralysis leaving a wife and one son.
Mrs Alfred Ruple traveled from Mottville to attend her father’s funeral but her husband Alfred Ruple died there. Neighbors report Charles Curtis turned 38 last Thursday. Mrs Pierce hosted dinner for several locals including Warren Woodward and Carrie Woodward. A nine year old son of A Grice required appendicitis surgery. Fannie Simpkins near eighty fell and crushed her hip and is seriously ill. M E church ladies raise funds for a church piano. Curtis’s decayed bone surgery required. he’s been ill since November. Orlando Becker the blacksmith is recovering but staying indoors. Mrs Charles Kopp is recovering well after surgery. Jennie Bancroft hosted a valentine party Saturday.
Henry A Styres died from injuries after a Big Four train struck him at 6 20 PM Monday. He passed away at the Sanitarium 72 hours minus 35 minutes after the accident. He was born March 1 1850 in Min ton NC and was married in 1876. The Styres family, long residents of Elkhart Riverside, planned to bury him with relatives in Hope Indiana after services.
Governor Durbin opines the rush to fill Judge Ferrall's vacancy shows undue influence from political recommen dations. He sent sarcastic letters to applicants and will delay a decision until after the burial, citing past "disgraceful fights" over judge vacancies and noting prior similar applications.
Col James 8 Dodge Sr disputes Gov Durbin misquotation and urges Elkhart LaGrange Goshen revival of the judgeship. A petition for Durbin to appoint Dodge circulates among lawyers as politicians weigh the choice to bolster the governor’s political machine. Possible candidates include James H State H C Dodge and J M Van Fleet.
H A Styres, a 50 year old buggy trimmer for Indiana Buggy & Harness, was struck by Big Four passenger train No. 34 at 6 20 last night. He was dragged 30 yards into a fence before thrown off the track and died moments later. His wife is seriously ill and could not visit his bedside. Witnesses describe the fatal accident.
Peter Crawford aged 60 died in Avilla Indiana from diabetes. Survived by a wife and five children in Avilla Kendallville and Ohio. Jacob Crawford and likely Rev. Mosier will attend the funeral Thursday. He was a member of the Evangelical church with many friends in Elkhart.
Hanna's remains will lie in state in the marble room of the senate until noon. Official funeral services will be held in the senate chamber with Dr Edward Everett Hale conducting. The president cabinet supreme court diplomatic corps and others will attend. Three special trains will make up the procession from Washington to Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon.
The Senate informed at noon of Senator Hanna's death by Senator Foraker. A 25 member committee was chosen to plan the public funeral in the Senate chamber at noon Wednesday. Invitations were sent to the president cabinet judiciary diplomats and both houses. The Senate adjourned in respect.
Amelia EB Specht sells 9 acres in Union township for 2 200 to Harry V Spade. Arabella Hildreth transfers 100 acres in Jefferson township to Henry Dinstitt and Charlotte B Smetzer and Fred W Dinstitt and wife for 3 dollars.
Edward Strang of Goshen Indiana aged 58 marries Melvina Gibbs of Goshen aged 43. William Uilery of Elkhart Indiana aged 50 wedding Cora Odell of Union Michigan aged 40.
Judge J. D. Ferrall is critically ill with pneumonia at his La Grange home. La Grange physicians Dr Porter of Fort Wayne and a doctor from Wolesttville joined last night in consultation as Ferrall had been ill for some time, with Friday noted as a recent date prior to the report.
In an open letter in Herald and Truth James A Bell accuses Mennonite workers of incompetence and sectarian bias harming John F Funk and the publishing firm. He praises Funk and A K Funk for enduring abuse while steering a record year of business and profits amid church faction tensions.
The Ladies Aid Society will meet with Mrs Charles Dills next Wednesday. Miss Jennie Carson is visiting Mr and Mrs Clarke.
OSOLO. Washington and Lincoln birthday events will be observed at Mc Farran school on Friday afternoon February 19. The program includes songs and recitations led by Miss Lottie Hilbish and Mr Ugean Miser.
Farmers in Elkhart, No ble, Kosciusko and St. Joseph counties fear heavy wheat losses due to extreme weather. Since Saturday, temperatures near zero have exposed ground and damaged wheat sewn last fall after a snow cover protected it for weeks. The thaw last week left grain seriously affected.
The Elkhart County Bar Association adopted resolutions mourning the death of Judge Joseph D Ferrell at 66 on February 16 1904. They praise his judicial mind integrity and kindness to the needy and place blame on no one while noting public calamity and personal loss. A committee was named to arrange a special train with an $85 guarantee to convey relatives.
R M Kellogg died last night at 6 30 from apoplexy at his Elkhart home. He left an estate valued at 200000. His wife Mrs Kellogg, en route from Indianapolis, is near death from cancer. Kellogg planned to move to Elkhart and had bought the Dr Short residence on Franklin street. He lectured on agricultural topics and was 61, a Methodist church member.
